What I did today 2012-2014

Before work I made myself a salad for lunch which included 3 types of lettuce, perpetual and red cardinal spinach and pea shoots out of the garden.

Planted more pea shoots inbetween some lettuce I've got in a trough.

Went to the plot after tea and did some weeding. Unfortunately I've got loads of grass that's gone to seed and as I tried to weed it seed was flying everywhere. So there's going to be even more blinkin' grass coming up.

Planted some leek plants that I bought off fleabay - 34 in total. Sowed some dwarf bean seeds as the seedlings I had looked pretty unhappy. Just realised I forgot to plant more runner bean seeds - will have to do that at the weekend.

Staked some tomato plants in the polytunnel and one of the broad bean plants. Put larger canes in to sort the purple podded peas as they have grown much taller than I expected.

Shallots have sprung up well, considering they were planted so late. Tried to pull weeds as I went. There are so many and it's so hard to keep on top of them. I will definitely put weed suppressing membrane down on the paths next year.

Riddled coffee into EP trays to dry
Found alliums in a chickweed bed.
Assisted veggies in other chickweed beds.
Harvested competition grade Groundsel (Senecio vulgaris )plants

Just sorted the greenhouse. Took out the blow away that was in there and put it in a sheltered spot in the garden - might put a couple of spare tomato plants in there.

Put three 50l compost bags down as grow bags and put bottomless pots in for tomato plants. Organised shelving for peppers and chillies. Placed flower buckets ready to transfer cucumbers into. Need to buy another bag of MPC tomorrow to plant everything into their final positions.

I will have 9 tomato plants, 4 cucumbers, 8 chillies and 5 sweet peppers in there. It's only 6x5 ft but it's better as last year I had way too much crammed in. I have about another 10 tomatoes, 3 peppers and 4 cucumbers in the polytunnel at the allotment. If there's room, I might take the other peppers down there.

Still have one corner of the greenhouse to sort out.

Busy afternoon at the allotment today. Gathered a couple of large trug loads of manure and planted a green and a yellow cougette in the top of each volcano heap.
Dug over a plot and raked soil. Sowed four rows of beetroot.

Erected another wigwam of canes (that makes two) and sowed climbing French beans around each. Lots more weeding done and lots more to do.
Did a bit of basic watering as rain was forecast and went for a 4.5 mile jog.

Came down to my other garden after a 3 week unavoidable absence. Poor GH - most plants are shriveled wrecks. Surprisingly the only tomato plant looks very healthy and has put on a lot of growth. There may be potatoes in the bags, but the foliage is non-existent. The Kiwiberry seedlings, indoors on the windowsill, have survived - I thought they'd be the first to go.
The "cliff", that is such a struggle to maintain, is a mass of flowers. Unfortunately many of them are buttercups A job for the weeken, weather permitting!
But the good news is, my neighbour has strimmed the paths and avoided the rhubarb - perhaps the first time ever

Finally something to report! Planted out runner bean plants at one wigwam and sowed a different variety direct at the other wigwam. Sowed some radishes and some salad leaves. Back is bleepin' aching now!!

We harvested our first lettuce leaves grown from seed today! Was real tasty, not bad for first attempt at growing something, hopefully the rest grow as well.

Watching the rain fall............luverly! And I see that the 2nd lot of green manure seed has sprouted (after about 8 weeks) and is coming thru, so the new horse getting in 3 times and munching on the mulching hay didn't stop it entirely! Looking forward to seeing what else goes ahead with this rain.

The wombok is looking good. Will harvest one today I think. Just need to work out what to put with it.

It's raining which is great - still had a wander around to pull more weeds, saw this one potatoes , any answer please ?

What Ive done over the last couple of days is to water in some more slug nematodes and sprinkle some more organic pellets around.
Plant up the rest of the sweet peas, plant lettuce and beetroot seedlings (completely at random wherever I saw a space!). Sow more carrots, beetroot, spinach and radishes. Put together a set of shelves for the garden so I finally get my patio table back (new home for baby chervil, chard, lettuce, coleus, aqualegia and geraniums). Plonk some more elodea in the mini pond.

Now Im off to pick my first lettuce leaves of the year!! oh, and some more radishes (the first lot was all top and no bottom and this lot are the size of golfballs!! I really dont understand gardening!LOL).
