  • Started clearing out me old shed on the plot that I'm giving up this year. I've sold it to an old chap and his moving it on Sunday. Which has work out well as I've had a shed of someone on the other plot and that's getting move on to my garden on Sunday! I've also watered and weeded on both plots and earthed mi spuds up for the last time.

      • Pulled up a load of Montbretia that is taking over the fruit patch. Cut off the corms and put them in a black bag. If they rot down great, but I definitely do not want more of the blessed things! Used all the top growth to mulch the spuds - so maybe they do have a use after all
Started to cut back a laurel bush that has outgrown its welcome - that's another thing I can live without
Watched the new dog, Lily, weave her way between the brassicas, with my heart in my mouth. She seemed unnaturally interested in the coffee grounds that I'd put down yesterday.
Hot and muggy today - lots of annoying midges around.

        • Next door had a load of soil to get rid of and were worried as to where it would go. We've bucketed it over the fence and most of it is now in the bottom of the grow bed my daughter gave me for Mothering Sunday, neighbour is trolleying rest of it round tomorrow, I need only put a bag of compost on top so it's done us both a favour. I think it's about 4' square so it will accommodate some courgettes nicely.

              • - potted on a couple of tomatoes and another chilli
                - planted out my Kenyan beans, mangetout and the last of the Tom Thumb peas, which I had started off in the greenhouse and have hardened off for the past couple of weeks. Kelvdon Wonder also planted out so just one square left in that bed to fill. Will start off some more beans tomorrow.
                - took fleece off beds 3 & 4 and covered them with veggie mesh instead.
                - watered all the veg, strawberries and fruit trees as they were all looking a bit dry despite the rain we had on Saturday.

                • Went to water everything as it's been over 30 degrees here today and was sure everything would be half dead but no, it's all still damp. Not sure what's happening this year previously my biggest problem was keeping everything watered.
Found some tomatoes that are still on the windowsill have curled branches...probably had a heart attack at the change in weather...poor things.
Dosed a couple of peaky looking things with epsom salts too.

                  • Went to the plot to consider watering but everything looks fine and as we're expecting rain early Thurs I think I'll risk another 24 hrs without watering.

However, the onion bed looked very sad - absolutely filled with 18" high weeds that I have just ignored so I spent a quick half an hour digging up lots of dandelions and thistles that I brought home for the chickens to eat. Didn't manage to do the whole bed in that time but at least I can actually see the onions again now. It may have to wait until Saturday before I can do the rest, although if the rain stops I might be able to go Thurs evening.

                    Harvested more radishes.

                    • Favourite job of the year; applied manure emulsion around the garden. Clarty!

Had to let in the meter reader who was ostensibly due in September. I think he saw the 25 litre drum partially filled yellowish liquid with a funnel in the opening in the bathroom.

On the bits not treated with manure yet due to foresight:
Treated some ailing plants with coffee / crushed seaweed as appropriate.
Planted out some more Pak Choi plants (vars Rubi and green <something>).
Planted out some more chick peas (Cicer arietinum var unknown)
                      Earthed up potatoes a bit
Picked some nettles and chopped them up into a bucket for an emulsion feed but will need far more.
Set up some pots and troughs for more herbs.
Picked slugs and snails approx 1L
Saw a long-taled field mouse Apodemus sylvaticus going from the blackberry patch to the rhubarb patch probably because the latter is immediately next to the birdseed and popular for snails. What a cute wee thing! It seemed intrigued by my head light.

                      • Neighbour kindly brought the rest of the soil over while I was at work. Unfortunately he filled the grow bed right up, so I've had to do some decanting this evening so that I can get some compost in there. The weight of the soil had also collapsed the sides of the bed so I've moved some out of the edges. I've also put in longer canes that I've lashed together at the four corners to stabilise it a bit more. Will hopefully complete the job tomorrow - I'm whacked.

                        • Planted three each of 5 different types of tomatoes before I ran out of space!

Planted some sweet peppers and two different types of chilli pepper (Jalapeno and Cayenne) in large pots

Watered any plants that appeared to be wilting.

Pruned and preened both my grape vines and tied in leaders.

Tied up rambling rose that was.........well..........er, rambling!

Moved a pot grown Buddlia which had rooted into the soil below. Watered it well to try and stop it wilting.

                            • Last night we transplanted 25 broad bean plants that we managed to pick up from a local nursery.
Watered runner beans and newly sprouted salad leaves and radishes.
