  • Yesterday planted out squash.
Today cleared winter lettuces which have finally run to seed (Rouge de Grenoble gets 10/10 from us) and found a load of spring onion, splanted out courgettes/summer squash which have still only got a single true leaf.
    Harvested garlic.

        • Took the grandchildren to school, sorted out the greenhouse, made lunch for daughter and two more grandchildren. Went to the lottie, managed an hour before going to pick the grandchildren up from school. Cooked their meal, made sure they were clean and changed ready for their school disco. Dad delivered them to disco and brought them back to me.

Got them all ready for bed, and now they are finally tucked up. Did a mountain of washing up, now need to put the washing machine on to wash their filthy school clothes.

Thank goodness Mum is home this weekend - how on earth did I manage with four children of my own?

          • - dug over a section of ground in the Wildlife Garden. The newspaper has almost completely killed off the couch grass and there was no horsetail at all. It's too hot to plant this weekend, but the pretties will go in as soon as this hot spell is over

            - cut 80% of the reed out of the pond. I'll start forking out the weed next week, see if there's any water left at all in there

            - after a poor summer last year, with virtually no flowers at all in our Nectar Bar, this year it's looking phenomenal, and the sunflowers are about to open

            - what a difference the sun makes! A week ago I got half a dozen peas & broadies: today I brought home 2 carrier bags full
            - spent 7hrs watering, weeding & picking stuff at the lotty
            - pinched out the top of those runner beans that are nearing the tops of their canes
            - spotted the first blackfly on the broadies, and 2 plants were completely, totally, smothered. Harvested the beans, then put the whole plants, bugs an' all, in the daleks
            - fed everything with a dilute comfrey tea
            - collected another dozen asparagus beetles for the killing jar, and noticed dozens of their nasty little caterpillars chewing away at the foliage. I will leave them as long as I dare, then cut the ferns and compost the whole lots, bugs an' everything

                • Watered and fed as required in the greenhouse.
Watered neighbo's vines peas, strawbs and potatoes.
Other neighbour's landlord came round to weed and cut back shrubs. Nicked all the woody stems for supports for my garden, got caught doing so and helped them load the van and sweep up. Always nce to end a potentially flammable situation with "you're welcome!" Hosed the lawn they strimmed.
                  Checked drainage of beds.
Watered a bit in my garden
Picked some bolted Pak Choi and red-lined my drawings with where to put them next year. They are still edible and tasty.
                  Bought some sand at B&Q
Had a look at their plants but I really have no patience for garden centres and trudging through large sections of the same plants.

Friday is always a rush as it's volunteering morning, careers supplement day in the local rag, laundry day, last chance for the week at the gym, I can't get the laundry done until Friday's gym gear is used and I need to have loose ends tied up before nightfall. As I get an all day bus ticket on a Friday I do the heavy stuff shopping so all over the place
Top tip: having two 25 kg bags of sand on one's shoulders to take home on the bus is the ideal shopping companion to reduce the amount of unecessary purchases at the supermarket after B&Q
With all that on plus work stuff, there was unfortunately no nice sit down in the garden with a cup of coffee to listen to GQT.

                    • Had an hour at the allotment last night. Tied tomatoes higher up the canes as they have really grown since I put the stakes in.

Weeded round carrots and and a small area of path. Picked peas and was given a HUGE punnet of strawberries from an allotment neighbour. Picked my own 5 measly small strawberries.

Going to pop up in a minute to water everything as I won't be able to get there again until Monday.

                      • Last week spent feeding and upping watering again, due to hot weather. Peas are fattening at last. Plot is buzzing with bees. Phacelia and cerinthe looking beautiful - as are the nasturtiums and marigolds. Squashes are all starting to set. Raspberries loaded but as yet unripe. Weeded GF bed as quite a bit of couchgrass in there - thanks plot neighbour and strimmer. I see the other one has the tell tale stripe of glyphosphate brown only two foot away! Great again close weave netting is going up.
I've harvested some noo taters, beans, broccoli, WSB, lettuce and rhubarb. Off to weed carrots and parsnip bed this morning.

                        • Have just spent the last hour in the greenhouse and back garden - potting on, watering, potting out. It's going to be a warm one.
OH and I are going to the plot shortly to lift potatoes and plant out my remaining toms and cucumbers - they'll "do" or they won't. I have no more space for them here at home!

                          • Took my missus to the allotment where she did a brill job at weeding and tidying up the garlic, onion and shallot beds. I managed to water the polytunnel and outside. Weeded my french beans. Also dampened the poly paths!!

                            • Extended the net over the Autumn Rasps as they have shot up. Planted out some leeks tidied one of the edges of the raised beds as it looked a bit wobbly. Had a good think about the bit of ground under the tree that that I sown with some corn salad as it grows more or less anywhere, got fix up a net some how

                              • Was out and.about nice and early this morning. Went round both my plots and greenhouses watering and harvesting veggies for today's meals. After that I was on committee duty. The other week we had some trees cut back. So this morning we had a chap come with a chipper and spent a hour feeding that. Got 8 big bags of bark chips too. Not a bad mornings work.
