What I did today 2012-2014

Went to Hampton Court Flower Show, beautiful weather, beautiful setting, and amazing displays and unbelievable fragrances, and colours, only problem these little cart things that people use to transport their purchases and also to trip you u,

Watered basically everything, planted out the last few pumpkin plants (doubt they'll do anything, and they both looked rubbish, but they definitely won't produce anything on the windowsill!) and some raspberries I bought a few days ago. Cleared the broad bean plants which were only growing aphids, harvested a few potatoes, some mixed salad leaves, the last of the strawberry glut, and the first radish, all while melting in the sun.

Pulled up the spinach that had bolted, after harvesting enough leaves to make a batch of saag aloo with my new potatoes. Sowed some more spinach and another row of lettuce.

What is saag aloo and how do you make it??????

Cut down my broad beans but left the roots in the soil. Plus left one or two plants to keep growing very big pods to harvest as seeds when they have finished. Planted out my Leek seedlings and put the last of the beetroot into modules.

Last night I discovered my peas were suffering from pea thripp (alhthough it took me a while to discover what it was). Harvested loads of peas and froze them straight away. Took me 45 mins to shell them.

Also picked more broad beans and some courgettes. Tonight I watered everything, did a bit of weeding, picked more courgettes and turnips, radish etc mostly for the chickens to have the greens as we haven't liked the turnips so far!

I went and had a look at another plot on the allotment as I haven't seen the plot holder for weeks. He was dead keen and put a massive polytunnel up in April. Anyway, no-one has seen him for ages and his plot looks over run by weeds. I took a peek in the polytunnel and it is clear no-one has been there for ages - the doorway was filled with weeds and the weeds were growing to the top of the polytunnel. It's such a shame. Hope he is ok. I don't think I have seen him since May.

Got out the soaking hose first thing. I'm planning to cover the other half of the allotment tomorrow.

Directed MrPP while he planted out fennel, beetroot and coriander.
Bad back means I cannot bend down that far for a few more days, but I can instruct from on high

Went down the lottie, did a lot of watering, some weeding, spread some lovely wormy homemade compost around, planted some turnips and a few other experimental seeds which will probably just bolt, but worth a shot.

Then came home to an email from the site rep saying my crazy neighbour has in fact quit, and I can take over that half-plot too! Yippee! My allotment empire is doubling! It's got a lovely sheltered hidden corner in it which I've been told should be OK for bees next year

Only problem is there's several large random ugly shrubs turning into trees, the grass is high enough to lose an elephant in, and the weeds ain't much shorter. Oh well- it should keep me out of mischief for a bit!

- harvested various lettuces and radishes.
- hand pollinated both courgettes as one in greenhouse and the other is under veggie mesh in one of my beds.
- have been watering potatoes twice a week and rest of veg every other day as ground is drying out so quickly in this lovely hot weather.
- sowed some more radish and lettuces, to keep supply going.
- covered pak choi and spinach with netting as pesky birds keep eating it grrr.
- planted out more peas.

plan for this weekend

- plant out turnips.
- plant more spinach
- sow some more mange tout and pea seeds.
- pot on and rearrange tomatoes in greenhouse as its beginning to look like a jungle in there.
- pot on cucumbers.
- see if there are some peas to pick as some pods look like they are fattening up nicely.

Having been WAY behind everyone else at lottie in my initial three years of taking it on, I can't help noticing that my peas, broad beans, kale AND globe artichokes are actually AHEAD of the pack this year - and looking FAB-U-LOUS!

Side gardens are not doing well, except for the turnips. Not enough sun hours atm. Found some potatoes that had been dug up overnight, so cooked them. Very nice.

Something has been kicking up the mulch all over the few plants that are sitting there doing very little atm. So uncovered them and hoping for the best.
