  • Laid some plastic down over the previously weed covered area. Hoping it works as it was the second time of doing it.

      • Watered everything, inside the polytunnel and out, with the hose. A heatwave and no hosepipe ban? Shome mishtake, shurely? The toms have been sprayed with Bordeaux mixture as a prophylactic against blight, so I watered them carefully by putting the hose end low down among the plants, so as not to wet the leaves and wash off the B.M. Fruitlets are at last starting to develop on them. I've completely forgotten what varieties I planted where, but one plant is obviously either 'Green Zebra' or 'Red Zebra', both of which I planted, because the fruitlets are striped. Another is probably 'Costoluto Genovoese', because it's already somewhat ribbed.
        Hand-pollenated two more courgettes.

        • Watered everything. Cleared another couple of potato plants, some lovely Charlotte's and finally planted 50 leeks. These I covered with fleece to stop the dreaded leek moth feasting on them!
Sowed loads of salad leaves, lettuce and radishes. Then went home for a long cool drink.

tomorrows job is to stone the cherries so they can fill the space I made in the freezer.....
Plum and liquorice chutney sounds interesting do you have a receipe?

            • Had the ridiculous idea of converting the chicken shed/run into a potting shed and keeping the GHs just for plants. Started to empty GH on one of the hottest days of the year So many empty flower pots - so I spread them out on the lawn and tried to match them up. Why do they make so many variations on a theme? Developed Pot blindness after a while. Carried some down to the chicken shed, moved an empty compost bag and lots of wasps flew out Retreated hastily.
At this rate all the pots will be going back in the GH

Lifted the onions - about three dozen. Topped up the grow bed ready to sow some CACA salad, I think. Watered toms (Minibell) that I've put into a raised bed. Not sure they're going to make it. Daft idea of mine, they were doing brilliantly in their pots, but I needed the room in the stayput. Oh well, it was worth a try.

                • Picked more peas. Having a great pea harvest this year. Picked more courgettes. Picked first broccoli head - looks absolutely perfect. Watered brassicas, peas, sweetcorn, squash.

Asparagus peas are in flower - only small plants at the moment. Runners are also beginning to flower even though the plants haven't grown much yet.

First tomato in polytunnel on plot nearly ripe - a black cherry variety. First muncher cucumber suddenly come from nowhere - currently about 3" long so will leave it to grow to at least 5".

First ripe tomato in greenhouse at home - red cherry. It tasted delish as well.

Picked loads of broad beans so texted a colleague at work to see if she likes them - will take her in some tomorrow.

Picked first and only justaberry and tasted it. Surprisingly sweet actually.

                  • Watered runner and broad beans, radishes and salad leaves down the allotment. Picked what I think is going to be the last of the strawberries and pulled a few radishes. Watered things in pots at home. Got bitten on the elbow by something nasty!

                    • Harvested:
                      Spinach
                      Carrots
                      Radish

                      Beetroot leaves
                      Potatoes
                      My first ever onion!

                      Planted:
                      More carrots
                      More mixed lettuce
                      More little gem
                      Kale

Need to get some more leeks in. And some turnips!

                        • Spent the day in Norwich with eldest daughter. No gardening at all apart from watering the greenhouse and picking a few salad leaves.

                          • Last Garden Club of the school year: we dug up the spuds, ready or not. We compared the unwatered bed with the watered bed (lots more, and bigger, spuds from the watered bed of course, but we only watered heavily in the last few weeks when the tubers were forming).

We could also compare the leafmould bed (clean spuds) with the soil bed (scabby spuds).

                            - watered last week's plantings
                            - sprinkled more organic slug pellets (snails have shredded the pea foliage over the weekend)
                            - chopped up most of the foxgloves: left on ground as a mulch/soil improver
                            - left the 6 biggest foxies for seed
                            - deadheaded the cornflowers (every day, it's a chore but they are beautiful)
                            - chopped all the old flowers off the roses, because someone wants a bouquet this weekend
                            - mowed lawn, added clippings to the bags of leafmould to speed them up
                            - and a layer on the compost heap, to speed that up

                            • yesterday - weeded bed 1 and then fed it and watered it.
                              - harvested lettuce and radishes.
                              - watered all my bags of spuds with watering cans instead of hose.

today - fed tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers both in greenhouse and outside
                              - harvested peas, mangetout and courgette for tonight's tea
                              - planted up some red robin tomato plants into hanging basket to make some room
                              in the greenhouse.

                              • Watered and fed cucumber and courgette plants. Picked ripe(ish) black cherry tomato in polytunnel and 4 more yellow courgettes. Man, that courgette plant is damned spiky!
