    • Played with the grandchildren, made lunch, finally made it to the allotment about 2.30

Removed the netting from the sprouts cos the butterflies had got through it anyway. Dug a stalk of potatoes for dinner, and picked french and runner beans and a couple of kale leaves to go with it.

      • Went to the allotment to weed but it was too hot so just concentrated on picking things instead.

Went to the garden centre and picked up 8 curly kale plants and about 14 PSB plants. Also got 2 long fruit cages for the new brassicas to go in.

Went to supermarket and bought some living salad to plant to cheat and get some more lettuce going quickly. Trying to decide whether to plant it at the allotment or in pots at home so I can bring it into the greenhouse when it gets colder.

Found the Xmas potatoes that need planting.

        • Cleared some more ground to make room for all the cheapo seedlings I bought at H0mebase recently.
Do you think 30 PSBs and about the same number of Tundra cabbage, and early kale, and spring cabbage are too much for one person to eat Still need to make space for the celeriac and my own Hispi cabbages, and the beetroot and the.............etc.

          • Weeding, more weeding and then some weeding, sharpened hoe and oiled and sharpened tree lopper and secateurs..much easier! Mr H cut back the laurel tree and hedges and I cleared as much bindweed and undergrowth as I could. Fence on one side is in urgent need of replacement and at the moment can;t get at it. Then had a barbecue and far too much wine!

              • Nothing in the garden aside from stringing my meagre onions (see below, small and not lots). Red still to do. Also pulled out the German juice extraction device and blasted the blackberries we picked yesterday. Must pick more.

Your onions look lovely, really tightly strung! How did you get them like that? Mine are always hanging down like low-slung... well never mind what they look like.

                      • Had a day off work today so spent it at the allotment. I got everything I planned doing, done, and more.
Dug up the last of my Kestrel potatoes. Excellent crop of large clean spuds. Filled two carrier bags.
Dug over the spud bed again to make sure that I hadn't missed any then raked it down and dibbled in a load of leek plantlets I had waiting in the wings.

Hand weeded the bed where the onions had been (now drying off on a bench)and moved four hoops and some mesh off my calabrese plant and set it in position. I then planted 17 PSB from modules into the compacted soil. Surrounded each plant with a handful of Magnesium limestone to sweeten the soil and deter slugs and rolled the netting over them to keep pigeons off. The original netting which has been on for two years was starting to rot (99p from B&M)so patched it up with some that I pillaged from my swede bed.
Collected loads of secondary sprouts from my calabrese and a carrier bag of troy onions which I know from bitter experience will not keep.
We'll use these first and use the spring planted Centurion onions throughout the winter months.
I also gathered some tomatoes, Jalapeno & Cayenne chilli peppers and a dozen eggs for good measure.
I could hardly walk I was so loaded down.

Why thank you! That was after they had been dropped as well

I have never strung onions before, but saw a vid on youtube and it seemed easier than the gardener's world one I watched that included dark arts knots. This way is simple - no knots.

                            • Today was day 3. We chopped down various rotten and overgrown fruit trees with a chainsaw. I gathered up all the branches and put them in a pile for burning now, a pile for burning later (when dry) and a pile of wet wood suitable for chopping and using in a wood burner. It was very hot and sunny so I found it tough going but it was a very rewarding task. Our neighbors cycled past and complimented us on our work which spurred us on even more. Now we ache a bit and are getting an early night!

                              • Went to the plot this evening after tea. Dug up the weeds out of the onion bed (onions came out a few weeks ago) and put together my big fruit cage. Planted 10 kale nero, 10 tundra cabbage, 8 PSB and 8 curly kale plants. Probably all planted way too close together but I will remove some of them as spring greens when needed. Put lime in each hole as I planted them. By then it was getting very dark and I still had to clip the black netting on the black frame using black clips. That was fun!

I really need to harvest some things but didn't have time this evening. May have to take the kids with me tomorrow whether they want to come or not, to pick. (I'm looking after a neighbour's boys for a few days this week.)
