    • Moved my hydrangea plants from pits into the front garden border where they will now stay, planted some pink heather plants and some blue cornflower seeds in between to give some nice colour in an otherwise plain boring area!

Cut what's left of my tomatoes from the plant and put in a box indoors to hopefully ripen off without splitting.

OH has stained my new boxes which I will be planting veg in next year.

      • Finally managed to clear the windfalls and cut the back lawn.

Bloody windy out there now, so I expect there will be more apples down by the morning

        • We were having a big garden clear up yesterday so obviously I disappeared into the veg patch...

Picked all the green tomatoes (or thought I had - realised after that I'd missed two) and pulled up the bushes.
Picked lots of carrots, but not all of them (intentionally this time!)
          Strimmed the weeds
Did some hand-weeding of mustard greens + lettuces
Laid lots of cardboard down a) to show the kids where they can walk and b) to suppress weeds
Helped DH rake up loads of grass, and laid it over the ex-potato beds as a mulch and earth-warmer for next spring.
Picked up all the crap that had blown or been taken into the veg patch
Built a sort of carport for the basil
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

          • Forked over the now empty tomato bed and sowed green manure. Took out pea frames weeded and planted japanese onions. Harvested bits and bobs.

            • Yesterday, I did some work on the new plot. Put up a new 4.5 x 2m poly tunnel, which I am looking forward filling with some winter salad leaves. And made the first of four L-shaped beds.

                    • A busy day today, Margaret repotted 60 Polyanthus plants, potted on 12 Broad Beans (The Sutton) that we sowed 3 weeks ago (every one germinated) and sowed 30 Sweet Pea seeds. I built another 6 foot bench for the potting shed and made the framework for what will be a heated propagator - 50 inches x 18 inches x 6 inches deep. I have ordered the soil warming cable and thermostat, just got to line it with polythene and organise the sharp sand. All in all a productive day, until the rain came

                      • Planted 3 different types of garlic and red onion Electric. Cleared out some courgette plants. Planted daffs, tulips and crocuseseses. I know, I've always said if you can't eat it don't grow it, but these are food for the soul and a feast for the eyes Very relaxed now.

                            • The lawn is still growing (it's still 12c at night here, unbelievable)

                              - cut the lawn, added clippings to the bags of autumn leaves
                              - collected 4 more black sacks of autumn leaves from the bike lane, on my bike
                              - parrot & dog are moulting, so gave them both a bath & brush, added brushings to compost heap
                              - thinned the bamboo, cutting off at least 2 thirds of the stems so you can see the canes
                              - collected more dry beans at the lotty
                              - left the bean leaves & stems on the soil as a mulch
                              - picked another punnet of rasps, made ice cream. Ate 4 servings of ice cream
                              - went biking to burn off the ice cream: picked blackberries while I was out
                              - put the Jap onions outside, because they're growing too fast in the greenhouse
                              - decided to dig up the tasteless Allgold rasp, possibly replace with Valentina
                              - met a new Master Gardener 'client', made a plan of attack for them
                              - attended a garden event as a MG, answering questions from the public

                              • Yesterday I spent the afternoon down on the plot. So so much to do. Glad I'm at home all week this week, so I can go down at lunch of after work. That should make a dent in the to do list.

Managed to finish harvesting the bortlotti beans...picked off the last of the pods and then cut the beans plants into bits and left them in the bed. Cut down most of the leaves on my patty pan and courgette plants. They've been getting powdery mildew. So I thought I'd get them ventilated for the last crop.

Weeded the onion and carrot bed and generally weeded the plot. Harvested 6 potato sacks. They were looking very sorry for themselves...and I doubt it was a great crop. But I can't express how wonderful it was to get my very first crop of potatoes. Cut down one of my pepper plants - jalapeño, in prep for over- wintering. Harvested the last of the cucumbers and then harvested a load of red chillies. I was going to cut those down too, but they're covered in tiny flowers. So I'll wait and see what happens with them first.
