Repaired the willow fence with some nice new pieces of willow. Picked some kale and perpetual spinach. Dug up my first ever Jerusalem artichokes. Made my first ever batch of beetroot and apple chutney - from a recipe found on the grapevine (don't know how to link back to an old thread, or I would!). Tastes yummy!

Mown the lawn for the final time, added clippings to ever expanding compost bins - must sort those tomorrow - also raked leaves beforehand and added those to leafmold cage, which is now full again. I notice that not all leaves are off yet - does this mean we are in for a particularly hard Winter? All medlars were harvested today as they were a nice russet brown - now what to do with them?!?

Two weeks ago, my new plot neighbours had enthusiastically cut down the patch of brambles, nettles and bindweed that separates out plots. They had been so enthusiastic that they had cleared a piece of what I thought was my plot. Here's a picture of the cleared area, including the back of my shed and my useful bits cage.



So today I finished marking out the boundary, spreading some old carpet to make a dividing path and dug over the adjacent bit of my plot so there can be no further doubt. Good fences make good neighbours, I expect clear paths are the allotment equivalent:

Chutnefied the last of the tomatoes. I always use this recipe and it's lovely - tho you need to boil it for a fair bit longer than he says. Nigel Slater's green tomato recipes | Life and style | The Observer

I cleared the roof of my garage off the other day, everything got chucked up there, but i did find a really nice double glazed window, about 4ft x 3ft. So today I have made it into a cold frame using the thick 38mm decking boards, It looks like new' I googled them and found well made ones are knocking on £350 quid! Anyone who isnt handy needs to try and get handy, new stuff is very very expensive and in the main inferior to stuff you make yourself. All I used was a cordless drill and a saw, tape measure pencil etc. I simply love making things, you look back at it, light a fag (Or suck a mint) and think "I did it my way" Funny thing is i didnt really need a cold frame lol.

I just loved that scarecrow story, If you wrote it then congratulations you need to turn it into a childrens book for sure.

I inherited several abandoned double glazing panes of different sizes when I took over my allotment and this winter I'm going to find a use for them. I was going to just prop them up with bits of old wood etc but you've inspired me to do something a bit more ambitious. I've got some reclaimed decking boards behind the shed that are in reasonable nick...

Mowed 1/2 the house yard today with son. Had to put a rocket up him first tho! 32C twas a trifle hot and sweaty and gave up about 1.30 pm. Will try and do the rest tomorrow. Desperate to get some seedlings into the ground but I know there'll be another frost soon. But I can't wait!

As soon as the tiny wombok put their heads above ground something is having it! It's up on an old entertainment unit on the deck, so not slugs or snails. Must be the birds I guess. Odd that it's only them tho.

Did a little bit of ground work with the horse who hasn't been ridden forever, and put the saddle on. He was not entirely impressed, but hopefully he'll come round, and I'll get brave and I'll siton the saddle as well

Went outside at about 11am to chuck some stuff in the hotbin. Outside temperature in the shade about -2C, temperature in the hotbin +50C. Impressed.

Was going to clear some leaves but decided to be a wimp and came back inside.
