  • Dug up a row of leeks. Smallish as I sowed them a bit late in the season. Picked some rainbow chard, had to clear snow of them to get at the leaves.

    • Moved some laurel hedging and redcurrant bushes.. Also dug up some raspberry runners and stuck them in various places between the new hedging..

      • Picked some more greenish tomatoes off the dead and dying plants - I don't have enough room for all of them, so the rest will have to stay put. Went to a Chrimbo market/fayre at our local farm shop and had a beef sarnie and some mulled wine. Made some mini Christmas cakes in ex- tomato puree tins. Something that I will not be doing again. Only did 4 and it was the biggest faff ever.

        • Cut down a non-productive fig tree (Brown Turkey) and an old vine which produces lots of sour grapes next to the south facing wall of the barn. Instead planted two Feijoa or Acca sellowiana trees (from cuttings) and a Black Hamburg dessert grape vine.

Fitted one of the new type 'nylon' or plastic blades to my petrol strimmer and having spent half the morning getting the b******y thing going, strimmed a small part of the orchard. Was so tired after pulling the cord so frequently I couldn't get much actual strimming done. I hate 2 stroke power tools!

          • Put the sprinkler on the rhubarb before leaving for town (forgot to turn it off before I left) and ended up staying all day...not game to go look at the tank, but we're still able to flush tonight so it's not all bad.

New seedlings are looking crap in the front garden, need to replant there. Out the back ok at the mo. Snow to 1300 metres this w/e apparently

            • Started clearing the polytunnel today. Just astounding how much space all those dead tomato, aubergine and pepper plants take up in the compost bin, and how many weeds have grown over the paths and beds inside the tunnel. Very satisfying though as the beds begin to look clear again and you can imagine the brassicas and salads that will be growing there in early spring. The morning was sunny so it was down to shirt sleeves, but now it's gone cloudy with a freezing wind, so even in the tunnel I have to put my coat on. I thought this was a job I might do in one day, but after all day I have only cleared two beds out of the four and then have all the pots of plants on the staging to weed and put somewhere warmish and safe. It's so easy to mistake little deciduous shrubs and trees from seed as just dead pots at this time of year, but by next spring they will hopefully push up a few leaves or shoots. I must be careful not to throw anything away until it has a chance of showing it's still alive.

                • Transplanted a load of peas and mangetout from Root trainers into pots in the GH. Hoping for some early pickings, even if its only pea shoots

                  • Harvested the last of my carrots and they were surprisingly clean and without any marks at all.

Dug in more wood chip into a new new bed I'm digging on the allotment. It's clay and wood chip breaks it down a treat.

                    • I did some outdoor work, for a change.

                      - cut down the tomatoes, all green
                      - cleaned the gh glass, with ordinary spray cleaner (white vinegar) & cloth
                      - lopped down the longest rose branches which are getting wind-battered
                      - brought home 3 bags of produce from the lotty: chard, parsley, beets, carrots, cabbage, black kale, calabrese, plus chickweed for the GPs
                      - put wet newspaper mulch down on the grassy paths

                      • Picked a few of the biggest sprouts "Trafalgar" to see if they are any good. But no: they are dry and tasteless. Have to buy some for Chr***mas. Maybe mine will improve in a month or two.

Measured all the pieces of glass I inherited on the allotment to see what sort of frames I can build with them.

                        • What I did yesterday

                          1. Pricked on 160 'mache' (Lamb's lettuce) seedlings into modules in polytunnel.

                          2. Planted 112 cloves of garlic into pots in tunnel to get them started. I will plant these outside in March as soon as the really cold weather is over.

                          3. Checked temperatures in my new 'solar' greenhouse. So far the lowest the temperature has fallen is 2C, while it has been minus 3 or 4 outside. Clearly it will need heating in the really cold weather if temperatures dip to minus 10 or 15.

                          • Had a lovely afternoon down at the allotments. Managed to make up another 4 x 1.2 square raised beds on plot 2.

Then went to plot 1 and gathered all the leaves and made up two x tonne bags to store them in. There were a lot of leaves. 🎅

                            • Sowed some early spring cabbage, 'Express', in small pot of vermiculite in warmth. Will prick on into modules as soon as they have seed leaves and put in polytunnel under frames.
