It boils down to the fact that cooking oil will not rise any distance up a wick, that leaves me with floating a wick on a cork or having a shallow bowl with a wick lying on its side, both work but are ruled out on safety grounds. back to the drawing board (thats covered in oil too).
What about using a tea light in an upside down terracotta plant pot ?

    • Pulled the spent plants from the polytunnel and gave the earth a feed and rake. Moved bits and bobs into one area of poly to sort later, in anticipation when I tidy up the shed!

        • Snap HH! They have been growing on in rootrainers, so I saw a spare half hour and snaffled it. I've also put some tulip bulbs in a couple of containers by the front door. I've taken down the bean poles and tidied up after last weeks gale. In fact I've had a happy hour, or just over. Guess what? The wind is getting up again.

          • Did not do much on my plot, but helped my son and his mate on their half plot. Delivered 7 2x2 paving slabs for them. They will be using them for a greenhouse base.

            • Spent half an hour strimming, and two and a half hours trying to start the strimmer and repairing it! Would it be more efficient to use hand tools?

              • Found a bag of onion sets and three bulbs of garlic in a box I'd forgotten about, so they're now in the ground outside. Washed my propgtr. Sad really when that's empty, but I'm looking forward to when the tomato seeds go in!

                • Continued digging away at the merciless bindweed that covers half my plot!

                  • Managed to get a decent stretch in the garden today after several weeks of kitchen fitters and being unable to reach any of my tools. Cleared a load of leaves and some weeds, and found a large cabbage white caterpillar on my broccoli. Harvested some leeks, carrots and the first of the July sown new potatoes, which were lovely.

                        • Planted out a Kiwi Issai, now the snows melted off the garden. It's going to grow up and over some shrubs - hopefully.
