Being absolutely useless at DIY, I bought one of these Grow Light Garden. If you prefer to make your own there are some ideas here http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...hts_69290.html

I got my grow light garden this time last year and found it much better for starting seedlings than my old method of using a windowsill, where seedlings became bent and leggy very quickly. I used it for various plants such as lettuces, cabbages, peas, tomatoes, peppers etc, and it was on every day from February when it arrived until August. Another advantage is that you can leave the light on for a few hours longer than daylight, so along with a warmer temperature the plants can be fooled into "thinking" it is spring. I'm currently leaving mine on from about 8am to 8pm.

    • What did I do today? Ordered £40 of seeds from Real Seeds, that's what! Ouch. Still, as I can keep the seed from it all it should be a good investment long-term. That's the theory.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

        • Re-staked all my tall brassicas following the recent winds (EPSB, EWSB, Brussels and kale).

Pruned roses, laid a slab path at the new bit of the lottie I acquired last year, having removed and re-planted the dozens of flower bulbs I dug up from where I wanted the path to go.

When I've finished, these beds won't be in yorkshire any more, but Leicestershire. I don't know if this is a crazy plan or a genius one - it is certainly drawing some looks of incomprehension down at lottie and people saying 'I wouldn't do it that way'... Anyway 2 beds are done now with another two part done. Planning 5 altogether. All I can say is WE WILL SEE!
If we have a dry summer I can water them for you, Noosner

            • Just spent a happy hour listing and categorising all my seeds on a spreadsheet. Then with a click, excel magically sorts them into categories and alphabetically by seed and variety. I love that, plus being able to add in forgotten seeds so easily. If I had to do it with a pen and paper it would never be done
Think I may add a column for sowing times later. Need breakfast now, and to empty the washing machine!

I discovered a fabulous little program called Listpro years ago. I think it is still free to try out for some time and costs very little to buy in any case.
It is far better than a spreadsheet to set up all your seed lists etc. as you can use date fields for for sowing and germination times, categorise in the same way as Excel, and also have detailed notes on each item. Above all it is incredibly easy to set up and use. You can export all your lists as csv spreadsheets anyway or even as html to share with others.
It's to be found at Ilium Software :: ListPro

I'm not 'marketing' this, but I have just found it so useful I thought it should be better known!

                      • Popped to Plot to see the damage, not too bad, black fabric blown off, secured back again. Fruit cage still intact, but a couple of the highest poles, leaning a bit, need an 8ft person to hammer them back into ground again, and one of the corners of strawberry cage completely broken off, very strange, that'll need to be replaced.

Garlic coming through nicely, leeks looking a bit damp tho.

Came back and sorted all my seeds, into a month by month sowing order, looks like March us going to be very busy! And now home just before the rain starts again!

                        • Lit the woodburner and had quite a pleasnt couple of hours pottering on in the greenhouse.

The main job I did was building a frame work of canes around my peach tree that is set permanently in the gable end of my greenhouse.

What started off as a fan trainng experiment turned out to be 'kite' shaped, to take advantage of the gable end shape.
The peach tree, red summat or other, was originally bought dead cheap as a bare rooter from Aldi 3 years ago.
The first year it produced 12 peaches as a bush, last year it produced 20 peaches with minimal training. This year because I've sacrificed some of the new growth by training,I'm expecting a depreciation in cropping.(If i get half a dozen, I'll be happy!)
Once the buds start to form I'll be draping bubble wrap over it to protect the new flowers which flower early in the year. Then it will be out with the feather to pollinate the beautiful pink flowers.
I'm also going to scrape some of the compost away form around the top of the large sunken pot and replace it with fresh compost with some rock dust added to see if it helps any.
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

                          Diversify & prosper
