Back to the garden again after a nearly 3 month break. I tidied everything up and cleaned up at the end of September so I didn't have to do any of that now!
I sowed 16 different types of seed yesterday in the propogator, flowers and veg. Including tomatoes, peppers and onions. Wanted to give them a good head start this year as I sowed them in March last year and despite some of the heat we were getting I didn't have any peppers or tomatoes ready to pick until late August.

A few folks on here have recently mentioned covering beds with cardboard and putting manure etc on top. I'm unfamiliar with this - what are the benefits?

It was good to be out in the back garden in the sunshine today. I planted the two half-price shrubs I acquired at the garden center last Sunday, emptied / turned the compost bins and cleared weeds away from the emerging spring bulbs. I have a few daffs in bud and the crocuses won't be long.
Thinking of spring...

Dug out the base of the old compost heap today, never seen such thick, ( I assume it is ) couch grass roots . . . it was a good 1/4" thick.
Glove for scale.
after digging out all the roots I could find I leveled and firmed the area and assembled my compost bins . . .
tomorrow I have a good few bags of roots and other weeds to take to the Council waste facility just down the road and then will start sorting the compost that was in the old pallet compost heap. It looks like most of it will have to be bagged and disposed of.

Earthed up the leeks a bit with some of the compost dug out of the potato bags. Nipped some of the long branches off the acer to stop them trailing in the pond. Dug a couple of leeks and carrots for tea. Had a play with the tower pots that arrived yesterday to check they will fit where I want them. Ordered 30 strawberry plants for the tower pots plus 10 packets of veg seeds which I haven't decided where to plant yet. I'm sure there will be some place for them. Did I see some planter things that fit to fences somewhere....A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

Decided to break my already broken back.........went to local stables & picked up 6 barrow loads of black gold. Dug out the remains of a tree root. Sorted a load of wood into their thickness in order to plan beds. Started making 2nd bed but got frustrated with it so called it a day..........sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”
