Clearing garbage, roots and remnants out of some of the containers ready for reusing. Dragged the "tidy" up from the bottom of the garden where the cardoon and artichoke were making access tricky. Harvested my parsnip container and emptied out the pots from the physallis I grew on the windowsill last year. Swapped round the BBQ and potting bench to make a bit more room for the 2014 layout, and generally gave the whole garden a few coats of looking at

Potted up some lily of the valley for spring planting. (3 x boxes of 6 bulbs in Wilkos for £5)
Sowed shallots (Zebrune) in modules. Sowed early leeks (Prizetaker) and late leeks (Snowstar) in modules.
Planted up strawb runners in hanging baskets.
All above transferred to allotment polytunnel and sitting on shelving basking in temperatures of 15 degrees in today's sunshine!
Started work on converting a strip of land on the sunny side of the garden approx 8' x 35' into a herbaceous border, inspired by a programme I saw on the box the other night. Gonna be hard work though - clay soil, grrrrr! Are y'oroight booy?

Sowed aubergine Megal and aubergine Black Enorma. Then spent two hours trying to find out why the electricity had cut out and we were without power. My wife has no confidence in my garden electricity so immediately concluded it must be the propagators in the greenhouse. I disconnected them and managed to get the power back on, then it went off again as I plugged them in again, coincidentally as it transpired! Then having disconnected them again we couldn't get the power on no matter what. Finally after a lot of shouting mainly involving blaming me for the problem, we discovered by isolating all the circuits in house, outbuildings and two gites, that it was the septic tank pump that has blown up! So we have to be careful in using the drains for the time being, but at least I have the propagators working!

It depends on how complex your affairs are I guess! Mine are fairly simple, as being a low earner (tax under the personal allowance level) I get away with sending in a simplified return. Believe it or not, if you ring the inland revenue advice line they are INCREDIBLY helpful. Maybe try that and ask their advice? I actually enjoy doing my return now because it makes me get to grips with things every year. I used to have an accountant and found that actually involved more work rather than less. Hope that helps! Good luck!

When I ran a care home I had thousands of small invoices to add up, plus wages and all that involves, it did my head in. But I did it without mistakes and in good time, then sent it to an accountant who just rubber stamped it and charged me £900 a year.
Now i have just the income from 2 clients and there are special arrangments for fostering i dont have to account for anything other than the total annual income from the clients. Just two numbers to type in and its done. I agree with Noosner ring the helpline and discuss it.Last edited by Bill HH; 20-01-2014, 12:27 PM.photo album of my garden in my profile http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...my+garden.html

- bought seed spuds & shallots from the £ shop
- started some of the shallots in modules in the unheated gh
- chucked away some of the dead stuff, which freed up space & pots, but I'm still fighting to find space in the gh, which is full to the gillsAll gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Oh my aching body..........Identified a site for compost bins. Cleared overhanging branches, made 3 compost bins out of pallets. Managed to almost fill one bin with partially rotted materials. Dug up some tree roots, made Runner Bean frame, dug & prepared trench for them. Sat down at the moment but if I can manage to lever myself out of the chair, this evening will be spent pricking out onions & leeks.........oh, the joys of gardening.......sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

Had to bail out of work for a family crisis, but when I got back there was my new persimmon tree and partridge berry (teaberry/checkerberry/wintergreen) plants waiting for me in the back yard. Need to figure out what to call the darn things ... everyone seems to give them a different name ...

I have been setting up little tissues with clusters of last years pepper seeds to try and find some good ones all now in the propagator tucked into the little space left.
Oh and popped in some shallot seeds I acquired somehow to see if they work compared to the sets I've got.Last edited by Ceres; 20-01-2014, 07:56 PM.Reap what you sow (Hopefully)

Did a couple of hours yesterday sorting the old compost heap . . . it's riddled with Bindweed and rubbish which I suspect was collected with leaves during an Autumn years ago. I will be able to use some of it when I transplant my next 4 Rhubarbs.
