  • Happy to see my garlic coming up. Dontcha just love seeing those green shoots? Chopped away at one of my tree stumps with my spade n got lots of wood off. Have been applying salt to the stumps every week and it is really working in helping them rot down. Using table salt as the rock salt recommended was only sold in vast quantities.

    • Trimmed dead leaves off my perpetual strawberries and decided to move them from the 18 inch square pot they were in into 2 large round pots. Did that, then was going to put the old compost onto the raspberries. Soon discovered the compost was full of vine weevil grubs so spent ages picking them out with tweezers. Need some nematodes, but I don't think you are supposed to apply them until March

I have quite a number of tree stumps on plot, mainly dead, but pretty impossible to dig out, am interested to hear that salt can help, does it affect surrounding area? And how much are you putting on them?

        • Had a nice time down the lottie, took our sarnies, got some tiding up done in the sunshine, without walking on the soil,

Dorothy, ref your tree stumps,if its an allotment, ask the powers that be if they can get a machine in to dig em up,although our site is rented by our committee from the council, the council will often see what they can do to help,

          • No unfortunately they won't help, I've got out some over the years as bits break off, and just plant round the remaining ones, planted nasturtiums one year and they just crawled over them. Apparently they were 'fruit trees'! I have to put flower pots over some tho, cos even tho I know they are there, I still trip over them!

But if salt will help, I'll give it ago.

            • what a shame, just be carefull of over doing the salt as you do not want it to harm the soil,it has been said on here in the past, salt kills some weeds, but overdose is no good for the soil,am sure an expert will correct me if am wrong, our site is extremely lucky,as DH does a lot of ground disurbance around the site, reclaiming overgrown old plots,he has a little digger, and can spend hours digging around roots,he often has to still chop through the ground roots, but he won't give up until the darn thing is out,he likes doing such things, but he is NO gardener,

              • Oh, well maybe I won't bother, I've worked round them ok, that's why my plot is such a funny shape, I have my bench near some and have thought of putting apiece of wood across and making a little table! Or somewhere to put my feet up!

                • Had a committee meeting this morning 10am at the allotment. Looked at digging another land drain in the spring/summer. Had a quick look at my plot before leaving. Spend more time sorting with the committee stuff then on my plot. I'll be getting a letter about the weeds soon lol.

                  • Brought Mr HB to the lottie with me to help repair my pallet compost containers - all nice and neat now. Broad beans I sowed in autumn are poking through the tops of their plastic bottle cloches, so ordered a mini polytunnel cloche today - not that there seems to be much frost about, but just in case... Cut down some dried teasel stems and put them up in the living room - an alarmingly large dried flower arrangement!

                    • Seems like a long time since I have done anything much during a day at my plot . . . but yesterday and today was able to make some good progress. More bags of roots removed (Couch, Bindweed and Horsetail) and got most of the side path covered with pine chippings. The final cross path is in (concrete gravel boards) I just have 2 left to position around my rain harvester structure.

My seed potatoes have arrived, ordered them through my Allotment Association, only planting a few, 2.5kg (40 tubers £2.60) of International Kidney, time to start chitting soon.

                      • Shopping and seed planting today. Altogether about 140 cells seeded up with various items - but mainly different varieties of strawberries (see see sowing thread). Nice to know they're sown, as I've heard they can be very reluctant to get going

                          • Was hoping to sow some seed today, but ended up fixing a leak on the shed roof.
Used some bituminous paint to seal the felt covering.
Then got a call from my mum asking if I could prune her fig tree as it had storm damage!
                            No seeds sown today
