  • Finally managed to sneak a couple of hours at the allotment. Because i was going to be there a while I decided to let the chooks have a roam around. The came out the run but quickly went back in when they were battered with the wind

Last year I trained my grapevine in two leaders right along the highest ridge of my home made greenhouse (Think, large lean to, 10'0" high with back wall of glass)

If the grapes or leaves are too close to the glass they get scorched. To combat this I've put a nail in each crossmember 8" from peak. I've then dropped support ties from these nails and fastened two long canes end to end along length of greenhouse hanging 8" down.It was then a simple matter of loosening leader from temporary ties and fastening it to the canes.
Hopefully this should treble last years harvest of 12 large bunches.

After filling a large tray of modules roughly 18" X 2'0" with compost I set 40 Centurian onion sets in it.
I also filled a normal seed tray size of modules with the remains of my Shallots I have kept over from last year. (about 24)

    • I cleared the shrapnel from yesterday's storm (this consisted of lots of glass that was sprayed across our lawn when next door's greenhouse collapsed). I feel for them, it was a decent 10 x 6 and is now a mangled heap.

I then set about improvising 2 door stop bars for my greenhouses (the big one had come open in the wind yesterday but was fortunately spared). I had wedged thick bamboo previously - but clearly this just 'springs' out when the wind gets up that strong!

After that I managed to get 4 trees staked and in the ground. I had soaked the root balls this morning for a few hours so I was kinda committed. Jonagold, James Grieve, Gala and a William's Pear.

I have 2 plums, another pear and raspberry canes to deal with also. They will have to wait until um tomorrow or the next day.....!
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

      • Dug up the last of the 'baby' leeks. Covered the bed in cardboard to warm up the soil a bit for planting next month. Cleaned and shortened each leek ready for a couple of suppers. Planted Alto beetroot in modules in the greenhouse. Gave the compost bin a stir, really not smelling great so added some cardboard and paperwork.

            • Dug out a couple of trenches for show peas, backfilled with really wet gungy weed based material which hasn't composted down fully, some old peat based tomato compost and finally a layer of fym and all covered in again with soil. Damned near killed me and these trenches are for her ladyship(who beat me with peas in the last show of the season in 2013 ) and not for myself. Mine are still to do if I ever recover from the exertion

              • Finally got round to pricking out my onions.
Emptied indoor household compost bin to the allotment one.

                • The weather finally allowed me out in the garden to sort my shed where I found a live caterpillar! My daughter decided it was her new pet and she was going to look after it by covering it in grass to keep it warm. Then forgot about it and jumped in the grass!

                    • Went to the lotty to see what the wind had done - lost a couple more of twinwall sheets from the greenhouse so decided to remove all panels now and will reglaze when the wind dies down........ probably spring 15!

We started to chit our first earlys and went to the garden centre and got our onion sets.

Have decided to start some seeds off at home now that the greenhouse is a bit out of shape

                      • A reasonable morning here today so I dug out some geraniums along the base of a fence. They were trying to grow in a few inches of soil on top of patio flags, so I decided to create a raised bed for veg instead. Dug out a dustbin full of soil, now all I have to do is wait for the raised bed kit to arrive. I'm no good at DIY so I am getting a 1mx0.5m one of these Link-a-Bord Kits and Components - Harrod Horticultural (UK) which should at least be light enough for me to carry and looks reasonably idiot proof to assemble.

                          • Got a phone call from my son, saying there was a delivery of bark chippings at allotment. So went down and had a couple of barrowloads. Will put around the fruit bushes.
Was sunny at the time, thank goodness!!!

                            • What a good son you have! Haha! I helped myself to some chippings too and made a workbench for the greenhouse. New plot coming on nicely!

                              • Watched the rain and saw the top of my greenhouse had fallen in. Hope my shallots and beetroot are ok. If tomorrow is dry and sunny like they are currently forecasting I will be picking up my garden tomorrow. It is a total mess after last night!
