  • Did a bit at home today in preparation for the allotment.

Strengthened my home made greenhouse staging, it was weak at the back and sagging so have cross braced it. It's made from tanalised sawn timber so has lasted well so far and is screwed together with brass ( and some stainless today ) screws.

Sown 70 x Leek - Toledo & 50 x Onion - Sweet White Spanish in modules. Makes a nice change for the greenhouse, have mainly grown Tomatoes in there over the years we have had it

        • I love the galvanized buckets, great find!

The Agapanthus are a bit of a challenge. At this time of year they ought to be nearing the end of a long sleep, whereas those ones look like they've been up all night.

I think I would keep them cool but away from frost, get them outside when it warms up a bit (April, probably) and let them get over it. Probably won't get any flowers this year but if they settle down and put some healthy growth on in the summer you'll get a good show next year.

            • I dug up more brambles. You probably think that's all I ever do in the garden and that my garden is really an overgrown jungle...................well, you'd be right on both counts.
But I'm getting there. One day soon I'll start on the nettles

                    • Re potted most of the chilli seedlings in the greenhouse today, it was 25 degrees in there!

They are all now on daughters bedroom windowsill and a few placed back under lights.

I put the overwintered ones in there today as well, but are now back in the hallway.

Also sowed tomatoes today (red alert and san marzano).

Sowed broad beans in pots in green house and more spring onions, oh and some lettuce.

Also went to the allotment today to have a look at plumbing in 3 x water butts. (I need to have a think on it).

                      Going out for curry tonight!

                      • Gutted! Had to smash a couple of pots today to get the plants out to pot them on. One was my blueberry bush which was in a £15 ceramic pot, and the other was my cherry tree which was in a £30 ceramic pot. Both of them were narrower at the top than in the middle, and once the pot had been peeled away from the outside the rootball was distinctly rounded - about 2" to 3" wider in the middle. That'll teach me to be more careful about pot selection in future.

I did manage to get my Jonagold apple out without destroying that pot (identical pot to what the cherry was in), so at least I managed to save one of them. I need to do my christmas tree soon which is currently in an identical pot to the blueberry, and I think I might need to get the big hammer out again then.

As well as repotting my apple, cherry and blueberry, I also repotted my elder black beauty, dead mans fingers (blue sausage fruit) and potted up three spring bulb troughs with mini daffs and muscari. The mini daffs are just coming into flower, and the muscari doesn't look to be too far behind. I also repaired the patio furniture, and managed to get some piccies taken for the blog - but I'll be uploading those another time, as I want to go back out and try and get my solar lighting fitted to the arch before I lose light.

We live and learn eh, I have done exactly the same. I have a camelia in a very large and expensive pot that bellies out. I think I will let it flower and then perform a cameliaotomy, fetch it out in little bits. i cant face breaking that pot. But for all practical purposes they are a nuisance.

What a shame to have to smash the pots, have you tried to do a bit of relief work within in the pot first,as in,is it possible to het something like a fine fork,or one of those older type 3 pronged toaster kitchen gadgets, and give the soil a bit of a poke to try and relieve the pot a bit,so you can squeeze the roots out, then if needed you could maybe do an operation tie up of the roots to help, don't give up without a challenge,
