  • Pinched out the tips of my sweet peas. One variety (champagne bubbles) has TOTALLY failed to germinate! Blackberry not good either. Raspberry Flake and Romeo both good.

    • Blimey but it's still soggy up the allotment, but the sunshine (probably temporary) has encouraged me to go out and construct some fleece tunnels out of canes, rubber tubing and old metal coat hangers. And fleece, of course.

I've got a fair few seedlings coming on in the conservatory and - as ever - I'm up for an early planting-out of salads and the like in the hope that I can defy common sense and get an early picking. I'm hoping that it will dry out and warm up under the fleece sufficient to make it worth having a bit of a transplanting session at the weekend

      • Today I thought about sowing some parsnips , have never ever had any luck growing these before , so mmmmm ground is not ready yet, and if I sow inside cold greenhouse what do I use as they put out a long tap root and don't like being disturbed . So after some research I decided on making some paper tubes out of newspaper. One hour later 20 filled 8 inch tubes with a seed in each have tired them loosely together with some twine and placed in a tall sided tray , will see what happen next

          • Phoned local supermarket today to ask for some flower buckets saving, lady said shed same me a few. Just been to pick them up and am amazed! Took me and two staff members to carry them to the car, just counted them and there's over 50! It's pretty much doubled my growing space - Very happy bunny 😃

            • Got an email to tell me that online supplier who sold me my Joastaberry that's totally kippered has accepted it's not my fault and there's a replacement plant being shipped free of charge on Monday.

I also repotted the first of my three Leucothoe Zeblids in some MPC to then discover it needs to be in ericaceous .... DOH!

Not having any spare ericaceous I did the next best thing .... opened a can of Dark Fruit Strongbow Cider. Didn't last long - time for another!

                    • Just picked up some seeds with my daughter.

                      She picked:

                      Pumpkin- mammoth
                      Pea- Lincoln
                      French bean- jazz

It's not a lot but it's a start. I'm keeping my eyes open for tomatoes I can sow straight into the allotment.

                        • Repotted my 2 Shirley tomato seedlings which are now 8 inches tall and looking really good. I visited a local garden centre yesterday and their plants were weak looking, spindly and had blotched leaves, so I'm really glad I grew my own. Had to put them on the windowsill as they are now too big for the grow lights which are needed for other things.

Moved the first sowing of peas out to the growhouse. These are early onward and germination has been bitterly disappointing (less than 50%) from new seed.

                          Pruned the spirea bush.

Harvested some salad greens for lunch and the rest of the new potatoes from the garage for tea as well as some leeks and carrots.

                          • Lifted my first home grown leeks - a few were a reasonable size with some others more in the baby veg category (I'd say more spring onion but if Mr Sainsbury can charge a fortune for baby veg I'm happy to agree )!

Quite pleased - I don't have a huge garden so tried using square meter gardening for the first time last year and think it's going to work well for me!

                            • Had a nice surprise in the old leek bed. Last year I accidentally puddled in some onion seedlings, mistaking them for leeks - meant to transplant them again but totally forgot. When I was forking over the ground today, I came across some large onions about six inches underground. I'm surprised they'd managed to survive being buried so deep, but they look fine.

Also, dug up the last dozen parsnips, which were just starting to resprout
