  • Seed Sowing Time...

Firstly, Susieq, hope you husband is doing well, wishing him a speedy recovery.

What did I do today? Ah yes... was up early to let the hens out. I must look quite a sight crossing the yard in my dressing gown and wellies especially when it's windy, good job we live in the country and no-one can see me. Must save up for one of those elctric door opening devices, they are just too expensive at the moment.
Very much the start of the seed sowing season for me. Spent the morning in the polytunnel sowed spring onions, some lettuce (mixed leaves and mizuna) and taken a chance on some tomatoes and cucumbers in the propagator. I hope I haven't been led into a false sense of security with the unusually warm weather we've had of late. It wasn't that many years ago that we had a couple of feet of snow and below 0 temperatures during the first few weeks of March. Time will tell.
If the rain will stay away for a few days the ground might dry out enough to get the early potatoes planted...they are waiting patiently chitting away in a corner of the polytunnel.

    • Planted out 30 bored bean seedlings - 4 varieties - for a taste comparison (I hope!)
Planted out a load of Bellis daisies - hoping to define the edge of a path with a line of daisies
Tickled the peach flowers with a paintbrush - can't rely on the bee that was in the GH yesterday to have visited them all.
      Dug up more brambles...........
Then it rained - got wet

                    • Had to go visiting in-laws today, so squeezed in a bit of digging beforehand - dug up blackcurrant bush that had outgrown its space in my teeny garden. When we got home I had an hour of daylight to take bush to the allotment, dig a hole and plant it. Hope it survives, think I need to pop over to Feeling Fruity to ask some questions

                      • Cleared another bed of autumn/winter debris. I was hoping to be mostly no-dig this year, but there was a large amount of perennial weeds going so I ended up forking it over rather thoroughly.

Put up a netting cage ready for the next load of brassicas then came home and sowed some more seeds indoors.

                        • Went to Lidyl and bought a fairly healthy Blackcurrant bush, going to plant out this week. The chatting potatoes are going to be transferred up to the spare room also this week, some are going greenish and others are getting soft and a tad wrinkly. Whilst others are behaving beautifully, is all of this normal? I bought mine ready chitted last year aka late

                          • No bored beans here, I have a lively garden . The chatting potatoes are accompanied by bursting blueberry buds, springing cabbage, shooting peas, and sprouting broccoli and alfalfa. Next thing I know the leeks will be bolting too.

Its quite normal for potatoes to go green if they are exposed to light, and sometimes they do go a bit soft and wrinkly. As long as they don't go mouldy or mushy they should be fine.
