  • There's so much to do ! I can't cope

    - moved my newspaper/card mulches where it's successfully killed the weeds, onto other weeds (it saves hours of weeding)
    - finished cutting down rasps. The canes are now drying out, to be used as pea sticks
    - sowed chitted peas direct under enviromesh (against pigeons, sparrows & hopefully pea weevil)
    - cleared another bed of green manures to plant 2 dozen mizuna
    - put the pulled-up GMs onto the beds that need improving. They'll rot down on their own, no digging in
    - transplanted self-sown flowers to the perimeter fencing areas, which were weedy & are now becoming flower beds instead (if Mr Nobody can refrain from weedkilling them this year)
    - mowed the paths & spread grass clippings on the beds
    - started turning all the daleks
    - moved 8 sacks of leafmould from home up to the lotty, to be used in the potato beds next year
    - found the remaining carrots are throwing out new leaves: I don't want them to self-seed, so dug up for the guinea pigs
    - cleaned out the GPs and took their poopy bedding up the lotty
    - scattered blood, fish & bone over the onion beds
    - planted out shallots, putting a few leaves of caliente mustard in each planting hole (against white rot)
    - & 3 trays of winter cress, which did nothing all winter in the gh (not enough light). They'd recently got smothered in greenfly, so it was plant them outside or compost them.

          • Taken the plastic bottles (propagators) off each of my seedlings in pots and added a bit more soil. 3 Cayennes, 2 Jalepenos and 2 red Scotch B's so far. Need more sun for the Scotch Bonnets! Few more seedlings in my propagator including bell peppers. I love a sunny day

                    • Today I planted 4 Rocket chatty spuds in a potato planter and excavated a hairy Anya who everyone thought was too old to have babies, but has some little tater toddlers hanging on her apron strings http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1217177
Did a bit of weeding around the perennial veggie bed, now that the new shoots are emerging and I can see what is where. Found some overwintered Ocas - left the small ones to grow this year.
Really pleasant to be out in the garden today, T shirt and lunch outside weather

                      • Was hoping for rain last night but all the storms went around us So new waffle bed still dry. I will put some seeds in and transplant some spring onions, put some more mulch on, and then wait for the rains.

Not much gardening to be done today. Need to rake the deep litter in the chook pen and add some herbs. Give them new water with ACV, and restraw the nest boxes.

Then I have to make some mini quiches, salads, and pack my bags for work. Sleep hopefully. And then off for two night duty's. Trouble is getting that sleep in.

                          • Had a fantastic day at the allotment today. My first day at the allotment.

Kicked off this morning with a visit from our local RHS co-ordinator, doing a quick seed sowing demo, a walk around the lotty giving advice and opinion and handing out oodles of freebies.

Got to meet most of the folk who currently have plots, including two other newbies who only chose their plots this morning.

Spoke to co-ordinator about my plans for some sqft gardening beds at the bottom of the plot and all of the taller veges (beans, peas, that sort of thing) and root or bigger veges at the top of the plot. We took a walk around and she agreed that would be a great option for using the space, keeping things simple and laid out clearly and good for experimenting too. So I'm thankful for everyone's advice on the sqft gardening methods etc, I'm glad I looked into it

Having a bit of a poke about on my plots, I found several signs of life which I did not expect!
Under a rather ratty piece of mostly broken netting at the bottom, we discovered ten very healthy looking strawberry plants with new growth and two unloved Kale plants. This area has a lot of grass growing between the strawbs so will need to hand pull them and inspect the strawbs properly. I'll have to get some more netting too to keep them covered. I'll pull the Kale and dedicate the whole bed to strawberries, may as well, we wanted to plant strawbs anyhow, so there is a free bed of them right there for us, woop!

Took photos of the plots to better help me plan what I'll need to do and found an old organiser diary thing, so I can set out some plans, look at seed dates and the like, later on tonight with a wee cheeky glass of something

Quite productive for a damp and windy day.

                            • Paid a visit to Wilko's and bought some Desiree potatoes and a couple of patio potato growing bags to grow them in - just got to chit them now. Also bought (but not veggies) some dahlia tubers, and some perennials (3 Echinacea, 3 Platycodons and 3 mirabilis) for the front garden. Also a 4litre can of Wilko Creosote substitute (the BEST fence preservative known to man, and woman, bar none).

                              • Well, first proper day at the allotment this year and first meal made from stuff I bought home. I just had some White sprouting broccoli, old desiree potatoes that survived winter, parsnips, carrots, and chicken breast.
