  • Today I have... Almost crippled myself with my first full day at my new allotment.

Cut three beds which (once they are extended to the side fence) will be 30' x 4' with a 2' pathway between them. The two nearest the fence on the right are going to be planted up with spuds and dug as we harvest (thanks o the advice of another member on here). The third bed has been dug over and will be prepared a bit more lovingly for climbing french beans and carrots.

And I have a nice big compost heap from the turfs that were removed. I am hopping to get some pallets to build a proper composting area at a later date.

Quite chuffed with the progress for 1 day! Here's a piccy...

I have 75 seed potatoes currently chitting on the dinner table and a pack of Cobra climbing french beans to start off indoors shortly.

That's for starters. I didn't want to buy too much in case it took me weeks to do the beds. I shall try and do another bed or two next weekend.

Oh... About as north as Yorkshire gets. My allotment is in Guisborough and I live about 15 mins away by car.

          • Made a start on digging my friend's veg garden, which I am in charge of this year as she has broken a leg. Its about 4m x3m plus an 8ft x 12ft greenhouse. The soil is pretty good as its had quite a bit of horse muck dug in but its next to a field so its full of willowherb, nettles, docks and couch grass, as well as last year's rotting potatoes. Should keep me quiet for a bit anyway.

Sounds good, maybe some onions to? Once those and your pots are in, won't need much attention and you could maybe use one of your other beds for salady stuff or spinach, chard, courgettes etc?

                  Definitely!

I want to get some fruit in too... Though not sure when I need to plant that yet. Strawberries, gooseberries and rhubarb. Need to think more about layout before these though, as obviously the gooseberries and rhubarb don't move.

Didn't know I could grow courgettes outside. Thought I would need a greenhouse for them. Might have to take a look.

                  Thanks

                  • Yes, courgettes grow well outside, I don't have a greenhouse, May time, after frost, yellow ones are nice and easier to spot than green ones, that turn into marrows overnight !

                      • Moved my stock of netting wire to the bottom of the plot (where it will no doubt need to be moved from again) and started digging in compost and fym to the bed my shallots will be planted out into. They were intended to go down the side of my resited polytunnel but the tunnel still has to be covered and that part of the bed will be severely compacted during that process. So change in plan needed and the shallots are going where my wire was stored instead. Never let it be said I'm inflexible .

                              • Planted my spuds - Lady Christl and Pink Fir Apple, forked over another bed on the 1st plot and then dug over and filled a new raised bed on plot 2. Lovely afternoon, shirt sleeve order. Came home and played with compost in the garage (my potting shed).
