      • Planted some potatoes and some donated strawberry plants? My plot neighbour gave me the most enormous rhubarb crown and I planted that in completely the wrong place.

        Then I got rained on.

        • Hello all

          Just went a brought:

          Potatoes
          Onions
          4 tomatoes plants
          6 strawberry

My daughter spotted a ginger plant and she loves ginger beer so I brought it. Got home a read the instructions... Needs to be in a green house (which I don't have) and brew your own ginger beer is alcoholic!!!

I will pass it to someone at the Lottie

          All the best

            • No gardening as such, but ordered some Comfrey plants.

so will need to find a suitable position for them on plot.

              • Easy kind of gardening, popped over to another grapes allotment for half of his lettuce and sweet pea seedlings and half an hour of chatter. Cheers Hawthorns !

                • Today I... Arrived at the allotment only to discover it had been invaded by bloody chickens and ducks! So, first job of the day was a bit if improv where I suspected that they were coming through. Am I right in thinking they will attack all my plants?

Next up, dig a couple more beds out. Unfortunately the heavens opened, but undeterred, I grabbed my waterproof, zipped it up tight, and carried on pausing only briefly for a selfie.

All in all, another enjoyable day with plenty of exercise and fresh air. I even managed to get a row of spuds in bed #2, whilst under those bits of mesh are some onion sets. I decided I'd leave the turf from bed #5 until I've built a compost area. I'm hopefully picking up some pallets tomorrow, so that will be one of the first jobs next weekend.

                  • Very busy today doing other stuff, but managed to grab 15 minutes on the plot, to plant out some Ebay-sourced comfrey roots, hand pollinate the peach blossoms, and clip some suitable scions from the mystery apple tree on the front boundary.

                      • Spent the morning at my friend's, digging more veg garden and picking out bits of perennial roots. I've dug about 1/2 of it now I think. Spent the afternoon dodging the rain at home harvesting salads for lunch and a cabbage for tea and checking the progress of my seedlings. Spent the evening ordering bits and pieces for the garden and yet more seeds (my excuse is my friend wants runner beans and I haven't any seeds...).

All in all a nice gardening day

                        • Planted our first earlies today and got told by a passersby that we were doing everything wrong: the chits weren't long enough, the uniformity of our holes encouraged disease (???) and we left too much space between the seed potatoes.

Also got told that we weren't digging right, that covering the soil with tarp/weed suppressant didn't work, and that we had too many blackcurrant bushes for two people.

*sigh* I'm really grateful for advice, but this guy literally walked onto our plot and lectured us for 20 minutes.

Everyone else at the site is amazingly friendly and while totally willing to offer advice doesn't meddle with what you're doing, so this was a very unpleasant surprise.

                          Otherwise: lovely day.

I can sympathise with you here... I got exactly the same this afternoon.

~ My spuds were going in too early
~ The ground is too hard
~ I should have rotovated the whole plot before planting anything
~ My beds are running the wrong way
~ And the very idea of getting gooseberry bushes is just preposterous - roots like triffids apparently

I really couldn't give a s***... I'm out in the fresh air getting some exercise and, if things don't grow, I'll simply try something different next year.

Suggest that he goes forth and multiplies! I am still trying to fathom how uniform holes can cause disease! and as for chits being to small some people dont bother to chit spuds and still they grow ok.

                              • We have a couple of "I wouldn't do it like that" allotment holders on our site and I'm learning that amazingly my mobile always rings just as they start to wonder over to 'help!'

I planted our onion setts today, dug over our large bed (5m x 6m), planted seeds for cabbage, red basil, corriander and melon. Then spent an age trying to repair and set up the auto opener for the greenhouse window. I thought I would buy a new one then saw the price so decided to clean and bend back into shape the old one.

Hopefully tomorrow I will get back to the lotty and sow the grass seed paths between the beds.
