  • Took my son to his rugby match whilst it was lovely and sunny this morning, had some lunch then got the wellies and joggers on ready to do some digging in the garden only for it to start hail stoning after about 30 seconds

    • In between the hail stones I erected my pea frame won't be sowing peas yet but I wanted to see how much space it left for my broad beans.
      Location....East Midlands.

      • Picked psb inbetween the hail showers. Lo and behold, under the netting covering last year's cavalo nero are lots of lovely cavalo nero flower sprouts. Picked them like psb and they tasted excellent.

        • I picked PSB today as well. More please . Had it for tea with some lovely sea trout, boiled spuds and asparagus. Asparagus was bought. I just can't justify to myself the time it takes from planting to be able to harvest this exquisite vegetable. I find it difficult enough trying to justify to myself, the time PSB is in the garden.

We had a day of wintry showers in Aberdeen. I spent some time in the greenhouse working with my pot leeks. Then I spent a while watching a dvd by an expert pot leek grower as I need to effect a technique to lower the button. (Don't ask ) Anyway, fell asleep in the middle of it so had to rewatch it to see the bit I needed to see. eejit

I was thinking about doing the same with mine.

Yesterday I did a lot of weeding and tidying, I also planted some Red and White/Brown Onion sets. In the evening I was pricking out and potting on Toms and Chillis.

Today I did more weeding and also managed to sow various Radishes in between the onions. A few small rows of Spinach, a short row of Forono Beetroot, some Organic Rocket and 3 varieties of carrot (Norfolk Giant/ Gigantes/Nantes). I also put some American Land Cress in a partially shaded spot that will later accomodate something more substantial.

More pricking out and potting on and sowing this evening when I have finished work of course!

            • Had my mum round for dinner, so took her to my allotment. Had a look around and then the heavens opened. Luckily we had gone with the car, so stayed dry!

              • Let me see... dropped some 7-7-9 around the fruit trees, a little more hand pollination on the peach and nectarine, and then dipped generously into the compost bin to heap up the raised veg beds, and topped off with some loam from some stacked turves. Oh, and just before the light faded, remembered to throw fleeces over the peach and nectarine! -4 degrees forecast for tonight!

                • Today I tried pruning 1 Cayenne and 1 Jalepeno plant, also I taken the bottom set of leaves off them just to see how they go. I have 3 other Cayennes and 1 Jalepeno plant left which I am leaving to grow without pruning etc so I can compare how the plants grow. The Scotch Bonnets are not big enough yet but I'm sure to try the same on one of them very soon.

                    • More digging - harder work today as I've reached the wetter more trampled end of the plot. Had to stop with a silly little bit still to do as my back was hurting

Cleared half the greenhouse which was full of all sorts of mess from the more normal plant pots, trays and watering cans to a bizarrely shaped large jar with some strange pebble like things in the bottom, and almost full of water, with 2 dead mice floating in it. How they got there and why I have no idea, but it did explain the rather unpleasant smell...

Sowed some cabbages and green peppers at home and some peas in the greenhouse, which went in an unheated propagator with the lid on to deter any mice which haven't dived into strange glass jars. For good measure the propagator is on the remains of a very old blowaway growhouse, with copper tape bands round the "legs" to keep the slugs and snails off, since I have come across dozens of the damn things in there already today.

Can't get over those dead mice!

                      • Yesterday pricked out lots of French marigolds (companions), hope the frost hasn't done for them overnight. Sowed Sweet Basil, but that's inside on the bedroom windowsill in a prop. Organised my pots under my new potting bench (made for me by my son from scaffolding boards you know). Wish I was at home today to play some more.

                        • Managed to salvage some strawberry plants out of my weed infested strawberry bed. This would have been the third year for the bed and plants were dwesperate for splitting.
Dug over a bed that had a few leeks left in it and 'healed' the remainder in on another part of the site. Planted the straberry plants in the newly prepared bed.
I have another bed of a similar size which I want to plant strawbs in but didn't have the energy to dig over two beds today so will hopefully get this done next week.
dug the remainder of my crrots up and tickled the soil over. I think I will use this bed for swedes this year.
Took a load of small swedes home from other bed along with pots of various cucurbit seeds to put on the windowsill.

                            • I'm still in the throes of putting my polytunnel back together. Got the side and bottom rails patched up and fixed on today. Will be door frames tomorrow and hopefully after that, I'll be able to order up the new skin. I expect there to be many more snags though. Putting summat back together again is never as easy as putting it up from scratch.

                              • A quick look at my bees as the sun was shining and the wind had dropped. Wow what activity. Didn't go too far into them but they still have winter stores, they are collecting pollen and I even saw some capped brood so here we go again. Just need some spring weather now!!
