  • Managed to barrow three heaped barrowloads of very strawy poo from when my neighbour cleans his chooks out.
I honestly don't know why he doesn't use it on the plot, preferring to expose his dead clay soil to the elements without any organic matter in it.

His loss is my gaina as after taking out any perennial weeds i just cover the bed with this straw and plant whatever I like through it. Eventually the worms take it down and it makes lovely humus.

Moved the wooden fence back about five foot on the end of one of my plots. Hammered a couple of stakes in to keep it up. Now when the local gypsy comes with his car and a load of hoss muck he has somewhere else to dump it, thereby doing him good in getting rid and me good in getting free manure.
When I come to use it it just means wheelbarrowing it back in and through the gate I have to my plots.

Put some rocksalt on some troubling nettles and docks which are on my paths. They had started to curl up there leaves even before I left the plot.
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

    • As it has been alternating between incessant drizzle and pouring rain I did not get anything that I really wanted to do done today. I did manage to split some cells of Spinach and plant into a few big pots and a window tray. These will be my back up as then slugs are already making inroads into the ones in the ground.

I did happen upon an exciting discovery: The brassicas that I had planted last year hoping for sprouts at Christmas - that did not yeild any sprouts, well, I've just been harvesting the odd few leaves for greens every now and then. Turns out they are Purple Sprouting and they're looking great. Tomorrow's dinner will be a treat!

I retired indoors and have been potting things on (peppers/toms/chillis/tomatillos). Also sown a few Sunflowers, though can't find the Mongolian Giants for the lil' un.
While wearing your night clothes, plant cucumbers on the 1st May before the sun comes up, and they will not be attacked by bugs.

      • Between today and yesterday, did my first seed swap met a lovely fellow Gardner who has a beautiful allotment I was in absolute awe of it! He not only gave us some nigella and poppy seeds but a mustard plant, rocket plant and kale and larkspur which I've been sorting out today

        • Dug another 12 square metres of top and subsoil out for the patio. The earth mound at the back of the garden is now 15 metres long and a metre high in places! Bought bamboo canes and fan trained my Peregrine peach. Planted out a pinkberry bush and a Versailles whitecurrant, which completes the fruit plot (for the time being )

          • With rain forecast for later I got down the allotment early and put in a full morning clearing last year's brassica beds. The promised rain never arrived so I spent the afternoon in the garden, weeding and tidying. Pizza and beer for tea, so a good day all round!

            • Went to the lotty around lunchtime, spent 3 hours messing around. Planted my first earlys and cleaned out the pond. My wife moved a load of garlic that had come up from last year, washed all the pots ready for the potting on marathon that will need to take place based on the trays of seeds we have in the g house. Mowed the grass on our two plots and next doors.

I was glad to see the grass seed I sowed about two weeks ago has started to sprout.
