  • Good friday. Can this be the start of summer? Sunshine all day, if a tad parky.

Pulled up most of my brussel sprout plants which the chooks relished greedily.

Weeded and dug a bed. Added three trugs of homemade compost. Planted it up with onion sets. Gradually getting through my onion set mountain on the premis "You cant have enough onions"

Potted on just about all my tomatoes 6 X 6 varieties = 36 plants in all. Still loads left in original pot so will keep watering in case any of the potted ones dies off. Watered all seedlings and put out beetroot to harden off.
Picked a carrier bag full of PSB. Steammed with butter and pepper added this is a supper to die for.
Spring cabbage is looking good and I will start picking alternate plants as spring greens soon.
Must have a 'Leek fest' soon as they will start deteriorating before long.

April showers here, and cold with it. Started outside, had to come in. Went out again, had to come in.

      • Added the third and final collar to my potato growpot and then earthed up the Duke of Yorks for the penultimate time - next tiem will take them to the top of the growpot.

Then I stirred up the compost bin (dalek) and added a new layer of brown and then green stuff.

Then I had a bath, as I was filthy from the composting!

            • Where in the country are you Nicki? Pop it in your profile then we can't forget. It's looking good BTW

I potted on all my tomatoes and I've been ruthless and composted some of the seedlings which has left me with 24 robust-ish plants and a couple of spares. Watered all the seedlings again and weeded some beds ready for the peas which are almost climbing out of the rootrainers on their own! Tidied up the strawberry bed and watered the garlic, which I intend to feed again tomorrow. Thought I'd lost all my borage, but some seedlings are just appearing. That reminds me, I must PM someone I'd become quite fond of ......

                      • Spent a happy afternoon moving my pallet compost bins from the top of the plot to the bottom - they were putting the greenhouse in the shade. Hard work but very satisfying (possibly I need to get out more )

                        • I didn't do much yesterday. I planted broadbean and snowpea seeds.
Mulched the broadbeans. Need to do the snowpeas monday.

And I went online and ordered a whole heck more seeds

Lots of self seeded things coming up in the garden as well, so very happy with that.
Bought my first F1 seed packet because I couldn't find wombok in that store that wasn't.

Will make sure I get some more when I'm ordering from the other company.
Wish I had another day or two to do more, but back to work for easter.

                          • Today I learned what Wombok is .

I haven't done any cultivation work in the plot in the last few days. Still waiting for the ground to warm up. No signs of weeds germinating which reflects the low soil temperature. Instead, I lifted some concrete slabs from my old plot and moved them to the new one. Had to drag them uphill on my sack barrow, and then push them up the ramp on to my trailer. Hard going. Ground outside old plot slopes upwards and stuck with car trying to move loaded trailer. Eventually had to unhitch trailer and move car to less greasy ground and then pull the trailer up using a long tow rope. Many bluewords. However, I did get out of there and later laid a few of the slabs in the new plot.

It's a lot of heavy work but it saves such a lot of work keeping paths clear later.

Kitchen spuds will be planted today or tomorrow .

                              • All Potato varieties in now, I had been waiting on my rotted manure delivery for 5 months and have just given up and borrowed some compost/manure from fellow plot holders with the promise of return once mine arrives.
