  • Easter Sunday and I should have been having a nice lie in, but I was up and about really early and went to my lottie at 8.30

The first shot is of my cabbages that I was ready to plant out.

The next shot is of 26 cabbage plants all planted out through the weed suppressing membrane. I'm not sure how good this membrane is. It looks a bit thin and although its been down for a few weeks before I started planting I could see weeds germinating beneath it. Hopefully it will do some good though. I bought this membrane from Poundland. I'll keep people informed as to how well it works.

This shot has the plants with the nets covering the patch. Hopefully they'll keep the cabbage whites at bay as well as the pigeons.

      • Checked my Fuego chilli plant after a weekend away in Hull. It now has a few chillis forming with plenty of buds. I can spot 3 chillis in this picture and 3 flowers. Last year this plant produced only 3 chillis but seems like I'll be getting 20+ this year I reckon

                • Didn't do much as it was peeing down with rain and mother-in-law is visiting. Just did a quick check of everything and watered the pea seeds that i'm sprouting on the kitchen windowsill. And made a list for our trip to Haskins tomorrow.

                      • Today I... Planted 60+ strawberry plants that came to me free of charge from my parents. And there were still some left that I shall pass on...

                        • Great stuff VC We have one poor lonely hen left who is laying her eggs god knows where, so we have to wait til she pops off before we can buy more as we don't want them getting into bad habits. She's the only one that's ever done this, pesky varmint.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                          • Oh Brian How disappointing. I know how you feel - we came back from a long weekend away to find my mother had poured away 2L of home-made elderflower cordial in a flask because she though it was something nasty the children had left festering in the fridge On the upside she bought me some Chase elderflower liqueur to make up for it

                            • I shuffled the garden around AGAIN today, in anticipation of the three new trees I ordered the other day. I must be getting too good at it as I ended up creating very significant gaps, so have ordered yet another three more One of them is for a neighbour, and the other two can be pruned hard to remain compact, so I think I should be able to fit all five incoming trees in quite comfortably.

I LOVE the flexibility of growing in containers

One of the things I did was shift all the ramsons into the shaded zone. I was hoping that they would be shaded out by the trees and bushes where they were, but they have been picking up far too much sun for my liking. I'm trying to nurse these on a little this year with them being new, so they'll clump nicely for next year. I also shuffled the chinese artichokes around a bit to free up a lot of space in the full sun area. They seem to be an excellent plant for packing into all the hard to reach areas, as they don't require any maintenance other than a splash of water occasionally, which frees up "working space" for getting to the plants that need a bit more TLC or give an earlier yield.

I really need to get some more piccies taken today/tomorrow

                              • I planted out a few more Kelvedon Wonder peas and dwarf bean 'Speedy'. I'd like to plant aubergine (De Barbantine) in a seed tray and try again with runner bean Scarlet Emperor, but the last lot I tried inside didn't germinate and I think the seeds are just too old (2011!). I have two young aubergine plants and two small aub seedlings already so not a bad start.

One of my KW peas is flowering already and the gooseberries have a flower. Is this normal in April or a sign of mismanagement?
