  • Veggiechicken, your chickens look exactly like the first girls I bought two years ago. I'll have to try to post my first photo of them as they look just the same. I'm struggling to upload pics at the moment

      • Finally got the last of my potatoes under the ground, having spent Friday and Saturday clearing ground for them.

Made significant additions to the legendary "Weed Heap of Damocles" in the process...

I'll have you know the moggie drives like a dream. No seat adjustment though. If you want to move the seat forward you just have to put a cushion behind your back. Luckily it appears to be just in the right position for I.

Backs ok now, so it must have been just a muscular twinge after digging!

          • This evening after work I borrowed a wheelbarrow and barrowed a couple of loads of straw with a bit of chicken poo in it that one of my allotment chums chucks out. His loss is my gain as in my opinion anything organic added to the soil can only do good.I added it to the bed I dug yesterday
I then barrowed a couple of loads of hoss muck and spread it over the top.
I dibbled the position for spuds but will trowel a deep hole in each position to plant..................maybe tomorrow evening.

That's good news Snadge, would hate for you to be in pain due to a pleasurable experience.

                • Started dismantling the latest free GH to come my way - a 10'x6' leanto that I hope to put on the back of the house or against the shed. Will see where it looks best once I have the frame here.
May have acquired a large compost bin (full) from the same donors.

                  • Went slug and snail hunting, and so did the blackbirds Decided upon a place to plant my last two strawbs as all the ones in the barrel planter seem quite happy now. Had a good look around for shoots coming up of bulbs and tubers, and was pretty happy with what I found. Sowed chamomile. Weather eased off, so I managed to get some piccies taken

                    • Inspected the chitting peas and beans - not much going on yet. Discovered my japanese maple is covered in aphids, although a few ladybirds are on the case. Noticed a few of the flower buds on the strawberries are starting to open. Planted out some nasturtiums near the peas as they are supposed to deter pea moth.

Managed to construct a plastic top to my hotbed which hopefully won't blow off if we have gales, so I should be able to put some plants in soon.

                      • It had been raining a lot yesterday, so just did an inspection, everything is coming up lovely. Potato has just reared its head above ground.!

                        • Oh heck, my tomato seedlings are a disaster. They've been on the kitchen windowsill for weeks and have hardly grown at all. The nights are still chilly and the cold air is leaking in. The squash seedlings on the upstairs windowsill (warmer) are romping by comparison. I need more windowsills! I need a bigger house! Imagine the conversation at the estate agents, 'only send me details of houses with big windowsills, south-facing if you will... it's for me tomato seedlings...'

                            • Been spending most 'spare' moments outside in the garden. Being doing loads of potting on, sowing, weeding, dismantling pallets, making nettle tea, seaweed feed, digging etc.

I planted out some of my brassicas last week, they were looking pretty happy until the rain came and with it a swarm of slugs armed with knives and forks. I terminated lots of them last night.

At lunchtime I decided to take the other route. I collected as many as I could find. They are now living in Slugatraz with food and water. Yes, Nematodes (hopefully). I also put out diversionary snacks and bolt holes for them and will be upping the prison population as part of my routine.

Also came across this - false widow like specimen .

                              • Have now moved some seedlings into the front room by the south facing glass doors. I have had to move this lot as there is now no room at the inn upstairs. Second lot of peas and sweetcorn are waiting in the wings. They have all got 3 weeks to shape up and ship out cause I'm off on holiday
