  • At the plot, planted out some cauliflowers, planted some more spuds (in very rough dug ground!), prepared the bean trench, weeded the big strawberry bed, got wet in a sudden downpour.

            • Planted my Setanta potatoes in growbags. Bought six pre-planted strawberry plants in a terracotta planter. Also bought a cucamelon planting kit with seeds, pot and compost - sowed the seeds when I got home. Stirred my compost and added water as it was too dry.

              • Today I... Planted stuff! 96 onions that I started in cells and then my second earlies. I also mowed the grass (sort of, it was a bit long so will need doing again when it's dried a bit) and checked the other plants were all ok.

The plot is starting to look pretty pleasing now! I put in 66 strawberry plants last week from my parents (reckon that's £88 retail at local garden centre prices of 6 for £8.00) and my first earlies that I just chucked in to an un-worked bed using the bulb planter are starting to show.

For my second earlies I tried a different method and dug a trench, then dug holes for each spud. Then, when they start to show I can just rake the soil back to be flush.

                Anyway... Here's a piccy...

Oh... I have a question too... If my grass contains perennial weeds like dandelion, can I use the clippings for compost, or will the dandelions grow in to loads more?

                • Today I tied in my sweet peas, one shoot to each string. A few of them are close to flowering, shows how mild it's been! I'll leave the protection on for a couple more weeks though.

If the dandelions have flowered the clippings will be full of seeds, and these will grow into loads of new dandelion plants unless your compost gets hot enough to kill them. Composting the dandelion leaves will not cause a problem.

                      • Moved the last of the potato bags out of the garage as the shoots were breaking through the compost. Planted out some peas, and sowed french beans, mangetout and courgettes. Removed several creeping thistles which have avoided being dug up on the 3 occasions I've gone through that particular piece of soil. They have a talent for emerging slap in the middle of a row of seedlings

                        • Pricked out chervil seedlings into little pots, potted on some tomato seedlings into bigger pots, planted out some little lettuce plants (grown in the greenhouse - have covered them with plastic mini tunnel cloche). Chopped up some comfrey and put to soak for comfrey tea. Topped up the compost heap with seaweed and cardboard.

                          • Potted up some tiny chillis.

Staked and tied up the broad beans, suffered a bit due to rain.

Put the famous 'free Charlotte pots', in 2 bags.

                            Picked off loads of snails!

                            Sowed more carrot seed.

Used all the pea canes, need to get more tomorrow

                              • Yesterday for me - planted out some beetroot, red, green, chinese cabbage; broccoli, curled parsley.
Mulched over that long waffle and a short one.
Lots more to do. Hoping for some minutes today to do the rest.
