  • Stripped the last of my thousand head kale from a bed and fed it to the chooks (Thats why i planted it anyway.)
Dug over the bed and planted it up with tatties.

I had loads of chitted tatties so planted them 10" apart in each direction. Bed planting is supposed to mean you can plant closer together.............so we shall see.
Tomorow after work i'll cover the bed with straw the a thin coating of hoss muck just to keep the organic content up.
I have two allotments but I am still running short of planting space. I am going to create three more 4'0" X 10'0" beds at the top of one plot where I had a chicken run. The problem is this area is shaded by a large willow tree so will probably only be suited to brassicas.

          That made me laugh!!

Today is the first day in months that I have managed a proper 'full' day up at the plot - thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't want to leave (god damn revolving planet)

A new job at the end of last year meant that visits have been limited - although thank goodness we never had a winter here in East Yorkshire, therefore my sporadic visits ensured the plot ticked over.

The work situation is now into a sensible pattern, I've got my 'mojo' back, every window ledge in the house has got a tray with stuff growing on it, which is driving my better half crazy, it's been an absolute glorious day here in East Yorkshire and since getting home it's started to lash it down raining.

          Happy days

          • Shifted a wheelbarrow load of straw that an allotment neighbour had took out of his hen coop and didn't want (silly man)
Spread it on my tattie bed that I planted up last night, followed by a barrow load of fresh manure delivered to the site. It will act as a mulch and by the time I dig the spuds will add organic matter to the soil.
Planted a row of garlic I had started in modules. Going to try it in the greenhouse bed this year as a trial. I grew sweetcorn in the same bed last year.

            • Potted on a pumpkin (Cheyenne Bush) that had got far too big for its boots, and two small kohl rabi that were the only lingerers from a cell tray I sowed ages ago.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

              • Went to my allotment and dug, then dug some more. But it was worth it - bed 1 out of 8 is done. And just in time, because my garden is getting seriously overcrowded! So I brought a few Brussels sprouts plants down there and put them in, then put some celeriac out as well as an experiment. I don't know whether they're going to be too cold since it's still early, but I've still got plenty of plants in the greenhouse in case these ones give up on me!

                        • Also managed to get my other half to think putting an extra two raised beds and a greenhouse in my side of the garden is a good idea

                            • Learned a lesson about not trying to rush things- I have such a mass of seeds waiting to get started in the heated propogator that I squeezed too many beans in, and the lid didn't fit on properly. They dried out while I was away for two days, and I've lost the lot.

For the runners, that just means a short delay while I get the replacements going, but I only had a few left of the other two kinds, and of course I'm going to take even longer to get everything started now. Bah. Oh well, at least I got lucky dodging the frost with the stuff I left outside.

For less abstract things I did today, I planted some leaf celery, did more of the eternal weeding and netted the gooseberry bush before the feathery ratbags scoff the lot again. I need to sort out more netting for the currants asap too.

                              • Dug up a patch and planted some French beans, found a red chrysalis in the mud which we have put into a container with holes and grass for my son to watch it change to a moth (we think) planted my flowers in their standing basket planters very happy with how all my garden is coming along seems I'm quite the green thumb the only thing not doing so well is courgette which 2 have died but I shall relentlessly try and try again
