What I did today 2012-2014

I had a few hours to kill before picking up an ebay aquisition and heading over to do some house renovation.
I put up a cane wigwam and sowed some Alderman climbing peas in modules.
I then filled four trugs with homemade compost and added it to my greenhouse border ready to plant some toms in it tomorrow.

Put another row of calabrese in this morning (12 plants) Did some more clearing on the new plot. After dinner at home I potted on the tomatoes, peppers and chillies I'm growing in the allotment greenhouse (14 plants). They've gone into flower buckets. And about 30 mins ago I took the down the allotment out the way. Been dodging the showers all day. Wanted to do some digging and get some more potatoes in but its been to wet.

Same here Kevin. We were guaranteed rain y'day (50-90% chance, all day) so I didn't go up the lotty. Therefore we had warm sunshine, all day

Same here regarding the rain. Will have to go back to putting up IKEA furniture... a trip to the Leeds one was Mr Noosner and my Saturday nite out! We know how to have a good time!! I am sure we did more exciting things when we first got together 13 years ago. Still, I am gaining loads of cardboard which is one of my favourite weed suppressants/mulches.

Had to chance my arm with the weather today ...

Planted out 2x Dahlia Yams, 1x Queensland Arrowroot, 2x Hyacinth Beans, and the 3x Minnesota Midget Melon. It's a bit early for them all truth be told, but I had completely run out of space indoors. It was a choice of risking everything failing inside, or risking something failing outside. At least now my dwarf pomegranate, chillis, and other newly started seedlings have a fighting chance. Decided not to risk putting the 2x giant leeks out just yet, but I'm hoping they're ready pretty soon, or I won't have access to their destination for the melons.

I'm considering renaming part of my garden to "chaos corner". In a 2m x 2m space there's a persimmon tree, a medlar tree, Jerusalem Artichoke, Globe Artichoke, Cardoon, Evening primrose, Chinese Artichoke, Hyacinth Beans, Dahlia Yams, horseradish, skyscraper lillies, 2 giant leeks (soon), midget melons, Queensland Arrowroot, Philadelphus and a rose bush

Sound's impossible/ridiculous, I know - but hopefully I've got my calculations right ....

Edit: Oh, and there's a space reserved in there for asparagus peas too

Soaked my greenhouse beds with the hose. Raked level and planted out one dozen beefsteak tomatoes grown from seed I kept off ONE large unripe tom at the end of last year.
Put some kale and hispi cabbage out to harden off under mesh to keep the flying rats off it.
Put the last of my leeks out to harden off.
Dug over a large bed that will be my carrot bed. The framework around it had rotted away so knocked in a few discretely placed posts and after squaring up frame nailed it to posts.
Dug over 3/4 of another bed where my brassicas will be going.

All this was accomplished in between short heavy showers of rain followed immediately by sunshine, then showers again, ad indfinitum.

Planted out green salad bowl lettuce, golden beetroot, green and red pak choi (contenders in Best Failure in the Vine show last year), kohlrabi. Sowed rainbow chard, carrots, parsnips, radish, peas - mange-tout oregon, purple podded and waverex. Sprayed broadies with home made chilli/garlic spray as they have terrible blackfly.

Didn't get any planting done today but did demolish a old shed on the new plot. Got my head together with someone else from the committee and were going to have a fire next week after dark shhhhh.

Addition to the above ... I've also potted up my two largest chilli plants and given them positions either side of the dwarf pommie in the lounge window. Cardoon seeds were sown in a trough of Chinese Artichoke that fizzled out (both the other two are doing well). Upstairs windowsill still crammed with stuff, but that'll thin out soon enough.

I've also figured out I might be able to squeeze my second (and last) Queensland Artichoke into "Chaos Corner" without adversely affecting other stuff too much (a job for one evening this week). I actually moved out one of the Hyacinth beans, as I wasn't hapy with how close it was to the globe artichoke, and tweaked the pots accordingly. No room for the last dahlia yam though, and I might need to add some improvised support framing around the cardoon and globe 'choke to stop the outer leaves collapsing on stuff. Job for later

Not a lot doing today between dodging the showers and the wind. I did browse marshalls and kings catalogues trying to decide who gets my business next year lol

[Greenleaves]

Got absolutely drenched this morning over the plot, so retreated to the armchair with a nice glass of red

[Artychoke]

Today I took mother in law to have a look at the allotment and we had a walk round the site to admire some of the other plots that are in a state that I aspire to. Later I watered in greenhouse and cold frame before planting up some sweet peas, bought at charity coffee morning, in a large container and making a windbreak around it from some heavy duty clear polythene packaging. Kept getting rained on and cats came demanding food!

Had my first day up my 1st allotment. Dug out my 5x5 m plot which was full of weeds saplings ferns brambles then turned it over removing many many roots . Strimmed the brush around the plot . Then added soil to a raised bed I have along with well rotted horse manure. Planted peas and spuds Back tomo to turn over the plot again
