  • Sometimes, the only thing to say on this thread is 'weeding'. Without it we'd all have better things to do. (When I say 'better' I actually mean 'other'). But. I was in the beds earlier and there was mud on my knees, mud on my socks, mud smeared down my shirt and my fingernails were black. And yet I realised I felt very happy. No weeding, no life.

    • Susie we have a rechargable strimmer and it's my best friend at this time of year. I like it that the bits it cuts off land on the rest of the veg patch as a mulch. I was horrified earlier how much the grass and weeds had grown in a week. I'm hoping that when I strim tomorrow I'll rediscover the back gate.

Today I went out to pick some parsley and ended up creating support for the experimental peas that are coming up, and feeding the rasps, loganberries, cucs, courgettes, pumpkins, peas and tomatoes.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

      • I spent the day WEEDING! but also clearing out the border along the drive, riddled tons (it seems like) of soil and sowed some night scented, stocks, race to see which germinate first-stock or weeds.

          • Planned to do some weeding! Nephew changed my plans when he fell out of a tree and cut the back of his head open! All ok now, he's using it to his advantage to get anything he wants

            • Built my road garden. Planted out 4 roses.

Dug around raised veg patch, put down wood chip.

Bought a new plant. Name Of it won't come but will pic it later.

              • Planted up GH no 2 with a mixed bag of tomato and cucumber plants given to me yesterday and mostly grown from Greek seeds. The tomato varieties are "Big", "Small" and something from Wilkos and one of the cukes is a "Sigagouri" or summat like that. He also gave me aubergine and pepper seedlings but I don't have much luck with those so won't give up GH space to them.
Its good to see the GHs filling up with plants, not seedlings.

                • Yesterday I planted some onions my dad gave me. I gave him some pea seedlings - fair exchange lol. I planted again some French beans where they hadn't germinated, that's the third time now. Planted out a squash and 3 tomatoes. Squashed some eggs on a couple of cabbages. Weeded, weeded, then weeded some more.

I need to seriously consider one of those. We have a 'site strimmer', but we pay a couple of quid every time we use it - petrol, cords, 2 stroke additive etc. I could use it twice a week! And I would, given the choice. You're right about the mulching though.

                    • Repaired large protection cloche for my brussels sprouts today!
Planted out under cloche, 4 plants of"Bedfordshire Fillbasket" and 2 Purple varieties(name escapes me). In between theses I will have some salad and spinach to plant.
Planted out 12 "Monarch" celeriac plants, given to me by fellow plotholder.
Also planted out 2 "Outdoor Girl" tomatoes.
Weeded a bit more, still more to be done!

                      • Potted on some tomatoes I'd forgotten about that were hiding in the stayput. Put French Marigold plants in each of the tom buckets. Sowed runner beans as something has eaten all my plants on the poles. Potted on sweetcorn and planted out snaps.

                        • After taking Friday off work I devoted the weekend to my plots, and I`ve paid for it ! I suffer from a Hiatus Hernia, and for those who don`t know what that is, it`s a debilitating Illness that can affect my whole body, and one way is a lot of bending down. I spent most of my time making , installing and painting a couple of short fences from pallet wood, also I hand weeded my carrot and leek beds, trimmed all the fence boarders with a strimmer and finally planted a potatoe bag with carrots in hope they might make show quality ( my first effort ) so my HH is kicking in therefore had to call it a day, hey ho! tomorrow will have to be a bit gentler.
Girls are like flowers, a little attention every day and they`ll blossom.
