  • - planted out spicy salad mix, cucumbers, more peas, dahlias from cuttings taken in April
    - picked another carrier bag of broadies
    - picked the first dozen peas
    - continued winding the French beans back onto their poles (vines cling on anti-clockwise)
    - a little bit of weeding, not much to do with my plot fully mulched
    - deadheaded the flower borders to keep the show going as long as possible
    - took 111 photos of the plot, looking beautiful in the sunshine (photos in FB link below)

    • Yesterday sowed carrots for the third time - other two sowings never appeared, I assume slugged. If they don't make it this time I'm going to use the bed for something else.

      • Yesterday actually ...

Declared the melons as deceased, moved the container to in front of the reclaimed trellis and planted cucamelon in it.
Trimmed some broken leaves from the now enormous cardoon
Moved the salad and radish onto the lower shelf of the outdoor staging next to the beetroot, to make room for potting up strawberry runners during the week (weather permitting)
Planted out asparagus peas and electric daisies
Improvised some support for the Jostaberry
Sat out in the sun and read a book

        • Made two jars of each if strawberry and raspberry jam. They were whoopsed in the Coop, would have been rude not to

          • Made another square foot bed in my cold frame, so I've now got another 6 squares to play with. Took the glass temporarily off. Did more or less the correct 'Mel's Mix' (from the Mel Bartholomew book which I've now got), though I put a bit less vermiculite, as it's so blimmin expensive. It will be v interesting to see if things grow better in there, as MB claims, than in the other squares in the raised bed, where I've used existing soil with compost dug in to the top.

Put in: a tomato plant, a climbing bean, a PSB, 18 beetroot (in 2 squares) and 4 lettuce.

p.s. MB strikes me as a bit of a fanatic. But perhaps you have to be a fanatic to persuade people to try something new. My fave garden writer: Joy Larkcom.

            • I love this too! Apparently it's an annual but re-seeds itself really easily, which has got to be good news! A bit droopy when you cut it and put it in the house......

              • Planted out mixed lettuce seedling that I'd grown in newspaper pots.

                  • Potted on 8 squash plants from the bedroom windowsill to the stayput - courgette white and Italian, butternut and spaghetti. Now off to buy more runner beans - first lot snugged, second lot haven't made an appearance and it's been over 2 weeks now so will have to sow direct and keep my fingers crossed and the slug pellets down.

                    • Another reshuffle ....

Since the demise of the melons, and the introduction of a trough of electric daisies, the garden was looking a little unbalanced. A sit ... a think ... and a bit of faffing about later, and there's more space round the seating area, and "chaos corner" is back to full madness again

Anyone who didn't know otherwise might even think I'd planned it like that

                      • Yesterday and today we spent making a long narrow raised bed to go around the runner beans. This was in readiness for the electric slug fence which we hope too finish off after dinner this evening. Two rows of wire attached, 9 v battery purchase this morning. Watch it slugs!!
(We did a trial run round a seed tray on Sunday and it worked so here's hoping. Have also purchased the real kit from Ebay to do two other beds without all this faffing about.)

Banged in a few "Dahlia's" still about 20 to do!

But managed to bag a couple of these!

I'll stick em in a 30ltr bucket at the weekend! Just intrigued to see if they actually work?

                              • Finished work at lunchtime today so visited the plot with great intentions. When I arrived 4 Red Kites circling above. I spent two hours watching them fly overhead....noisy critters as well
