  • Took the strimmer to allotment and strimmed two overgrown plots. These are plotholders plots who haven't been seen since the day they paid there subs some two months ago!
Seeing as I had the strimmer, and because I'm sick of trying to seperate herbs from the weeds, I strimmed my large herb wheel in the centre of my plot. Two of the segments I've filled in with paviors so I now have a shortcut across the centre of the 10'00" diameter wheel. Resited my seat and shifted a potted flowering Dahlia into position to brighten the area up.

Hand weeded my Kelsae onions and leeks, some of which have ran to seed.

    • Not a lot done today as I had reports and invoicing to complete, spent an hour flooding the beans and really desperate for some rain, even the weeds are struggling.

Started planning an area for my grandkids to explore gardening in.

      • Over the last few days:
sowed chicory, chinese cabbage, winter radish, planted out some brussels under netting so the ariel rats don't scoff 'em, picked lovely bunches of sweet peas, staked the sunflowers, hacked back the hazel that was starting to choke the morello, and started making a fence out of the body of my fallen foe (aka the hazel I already dug out).

Also weeded, watered, weeded some more and watered again.

Still making slow progress on the beds in the new half plot. I don't think I'll be done in time to plant up much but green manure for over winter, as my brassicas are pretty well all out now, so I'm not rushing too much.

        • Removed 2 rows of finished peas and a large broccoli plant that was covered in butterfly eggs. Replaced one lot of peas with 2 new broccoli plants and constructed a very DIY veggiemesh cage using canes and a few bits of fruit cage frame, Figo connectors and a spare fruit cage zip.

Hopefully that will keep out the beasties.

Went to Sainsburys and observed the prices of calabrese (£1.29 for a head of organic), courgettes (£1.60) and potatoes (£2 for a small bag) with satisfaction. Forgot to look at onions and green peppers, and couldn't see any fresh peas. I ate all of those from my garden today .

            • Erk! I'm off camping tomorrow in Ireland, I hope it doesn't too!

Just nipped down the plot to mulch stuff with grass clippings, in the hope it'll keep things a bit happier while I'm away.

Annoyingly it looks like most of the plums will be ripening while I'm not there, I just had the first few. I did tell the neighbour to help himself, but I think he'll be away too for half the week. They're nice, hope they don't all get wasted. Hopefully there'll still be some left when I get back for me to chutnify and maybe wineate.

                • I didn't think rain was forecast? Off on long weekend to London!

Watered all the GH, chillies on damp matting, black currants picked and 4 trees chopped and logged. (Tree surgeon did the trees!!)

                  • Absolutely tipping it down in Dorset currently. If I'd have known I wouldn't have watered the garden earlier!! I didn't think it was forecast tonight.

                      • Tipping it down here today as well. We didn't get the flash flooding they were forecasting but got a fair bit of rain and some thunder.
                        Currently rainy and humid.

Heavy thunderstorms have been forecast for last night and into the weekend for some time. Tonight and tomorrow are likely to be particularly bad, with an amber warning for torrential rain over much of England - see Met Office: UK: severe weather warnings

                          • Harvested my Japanese onions today. Even though they were only planted 4 inches apart they were mahoosive and are bigger than my Kelsae onions (my biggies still have a bit of growing to do yet though!)
Did a cursory weed of the bed, added a couple of handfuls of Magnesium Limestone, raked the bed level then sowed Golden Ball turnips where the onions had been. I purposely didn't dig the area for the turnips as they are a brassica and most brassicas don't like 'fluffy' soil.
I then had a pleasant hour sitting on my bench and cleaning up the onions ready to be strung up once the tops had died down a bit. I now have a park bench full of ripening onions.
Weeded a tattie bed then weeded my carrot bed which is sparsely populated by carrots (and thats after two sowings!)
Watered the greenhouses as the toms were showing signs of distress. 15 minutes after watering they had all perked up!

                            • Transplanted my 2nd batch of leeks from the nursery bed to their final row positions, one more row to do , maybe tomorrow in between the thunder storms.
