Hopefully that will keep out the beasties.
"lady P" May I ask what are fruit cage zip's? Do they stick on? Or do ya stitch em on?

And how does one acquired such said zip's?

That maybe the answer to all my prayers regarding the front of my "Brassica Cage"

        • Shredded the cuttings from the bloody hedge. God how I hate that thing, 20 metres long, 3 metres tall, I still have to reduce the height by a metre or so, depending on what my neighbour wants. Fences might be uglier and less bird friendlier, but they are less work.

          • Finally planted out my leeks and covered them with fleece. This will hopefully stop the leek moth!
            Pricked out salad seedlings.
            Quick hoe.
            Picked some flowers!

              • Managed to get out in amongst the showers to harvest various veg both from here and from my friend's garden. Planted out some leeks and late peas, and removed some old pea plants. Now I just need to get the remainder of the creeping thistles out and I can sow some chard and mooli for winter.

Deadheaded the flowers and inspected the potatoes and tomatoes for blight (full Smith period here yesterday and today). Noticed one of the Totem tomatoes is turning red - the first of the outdoor fruit to do so.

                    • Love the squirrel.

Today I started clearing and digging over the new allotment and boy does my body know it!

                      • Spent some proper time in the veg patch today for the first time in ages. I wanted to get planted a few final things that will still have a chance, as this year has been a shocker for me.

Had lots of weeding to do (and loads more left to do!) - bloody nettles and sticky weed, grrrr. Had a good go in the lettuce patch and planted more lettuces, and added a few carrots in another corner. Weeded the onions and garlic and was amazed at the size of the onions - they're the best ever. I'm astonished as they went in late and have been completely ignored ever since.

I planted a borage that to my delight is flowering both blue and pink, raised from seed. When I'd pulled up all the sticky weed etc I put some bean 'seeds' in next to the peas, that are having a second wind.

Tied up a tomato that was starting to list, cut back the lemon balm, thrilled to see flowers on the aubergine and to see that a kohl rabi is forming. According to my packets there's still time to plant kohl rabi, so I'll do that later in the week.
Is there anything that isn't made better by half an hour pottering in the veg patch?

                          • Yesterday evening I went to the allotment and was initially very despondent at the amount if weeds but then I saw all the baby butternut squash that had formed since earlier in the week and that cheered me up😊
Must get hold of that strimmer though!

                            • Watered the vegetables bed, the fruit trees, and berry bushes last night. (Also watered the 7 newly planted trees around the pond. Lots of work carrying buckets of pond water.)

                              • I feel like I'm s l o w l y starting to get on top of things again. My aim is to do half an hour a day at least. Today in my half hour I weeded (dandelions and docks) around the aubergines, chives, celery and almost non-existent melothrie, tied up a few tomatoes and discovered a large chap growing on one of the vines, pruned my parsley which is the very living definition on gone to seed - there's hardly a leaf to be seen, it's all seed heads - and watered the seeds I planted in the last couple of days.
