  • Planted out a few onion sets and half my garlic including a bulb from supermarket . Dug up sweet corn and composted.

I've got a blackberry that rips you to shreds every time you get near. I was going to dig it up and burn it come winter but I picked 3lb off it today. I don't like blackberry so I'm going to turn them into wine. It's my first attempt at making wine from scratch. I might keep the blackberry now.

    • Dispatched the jack be little plants to the compost along with various other bits and pieces and grass cuttings to the Dalek, filling up nicely again. Runner beans will be the next to be chopped up. Picked the last few edible ones to have with dinner tonight.
It's sad everything is winding down, but plans are afoot for next years planting.
Oh and I fulfilled my promise to our Daughter ref the Christmas present list that I never give an answer to.

        • Nipped down the plot for a bit. The grass needs cutting, but there were a bunch of people picnicking on the orchard next door, and besides, I was wearing sandals, not ideal strimmer footwear. It'll have to wait a day or so.

Tidied up a few beds, hacked back a bit of the 'herb corner' aka total mess on the new half of the plot, sowed some salad mix (probably a bit late, but I might as well!), and started filling up an old bin I found, so I can plant horseradish in it.

Pulled a few carrots, only to find that the few that were supposed to be long rooted are almost as short as the pathetic short rooted ones. They were nearly spherical as well! Maybe it's the bed. I hope the parsnips, right next to them, aren't like that too, or I really will be grumpy!

Picked a few more runners; hopefully they'll keep going a little longer, I've not had enough to get sick of them this year.

          • Went to plot, that's two days running, so much tidying and cutting back to do. Cleared one bed apart from land cress which I left, sowed a green manure there, it does need something. Chopped down a small grassy area and also my lavender, it smelt beautiful. Dug over a big around squashes, pulled up most, but some still have some patty pans, and a couple of sweet dumpling.

Had a chat to older couple of allotmenteers, and gave them some Runner Beans, and some cosmos, it just goes on and on, and in one area has self seeded and the plants are about afoot high!

Chucked a handful of chicken pellets around sprouts and broccoli.

Oh yes, picked broccoli to add to quiche tomorrow.

                  • Spent the morning at my friend's mostly clearing up, taking out the french beans which have finished and planting out a few lollo rossa plants. Spent a while discussing the possibility of converting the veg area to raised beds as well as what we might do in the greenhouse and polytunnel and how to tackle those pesky rats. Looks like I will be doing veggies there again next year

Made some courgette and tomato soup for lunch.

In the afternoon I cut more leaves off the tomatoes and picked yet more of them to fill the space I'd cleared making the soup. Took the tumbling toms down off the fence and threw them out as they were looking decidedly past it. Not impressed with these and won't be doing them again. Discovered a baby cucumber lurking behind the beans . Took the net off the blueberries and picked the few that were left along with some raspberries. Took the net off the broccoli that's been eaten by dot moth caterpillars and found one more lurking. Moved the trough of leeks out from behind the raised bed into a (very slightly) lighter position. Now all I need to do is move the growhouse into another new position, but that will have to wait until the tomatoes in it are finished (if they ever ripen). It is just too shady for greenhouse crops against the fence because of the clematis growing up the arch.

Finished off a good day's gardening by stringing the remaining onions.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

                        • Today I've been working on my herbaceous border. I started off by just bunging stuff in and it looked a bit of a dogs dinner this summer, so I'm moving stuff around and dividing things as I go. My cold frame is filling up with pots of spare plants that I don't immediately know where to place, but I think I've given the remaining plants room to breathe and access to air and light now.

It's going to take me a few days to finish, but I'm enjoying the process. I should have some small gaps to put some tulip bulbs in as well.

                            • Tried to sleep most of the morning. Then this afternoon I made a vegetable soup and a Italian herb, pepper, onion, tomato & garlic sauce for tonight's tea.
