  • I find loads to do at lottie in winter, mainly because I love being down there when it's a crisp sunny wintry day. Spent a happy afternoon yesterday weeding and making a chicken wire leaf bin in a corner behind the shed which I've newly cleared. Then I planted a cherry tree in front of it. Because the bin is triangular it has taken loads of leaves and they look beautiful, all gold and copper. Then there's the Stella cherry in front, with its plum coloured bark. Stunning! Extra satisfying as it was a wasted corner before - which really was a waste as it gets loads of sun. I've cleared a space for a Morello cherry as well, on another part of the plot... I really am running out of space now...

A propos of which, I wrote to the Parish Council again last night about the neglected plot next to mine, making a few suggestions (very politely, of course..!) I WISH they would either let it to someone or let me take it over. I'd plant raspberries galore, have a big potato patch, put some apple trees in and build a big mesh tunnel for brasssicas. It would all be up and running by next summer!! Oh well, a girl can dream.

Funny what you dream about as you get older, intit?

    • Used my brand new towbar today. Borrowed my mate's trailer and managed to collect 20 bags of horse manure for the allotment. 17 bags in the trailer and 3 in the car boot. Hoping to spread over next time I'm off from work!

I think as you're now an award winning gardener they should let you have it!

          • Today I moved my raspberry canes "Glen Moy" from back garden to allotment. While I was there I took pictures of every bed, then updated my blog with a report card for the season.

I gave myself "B-, must try harder". Oh well, I'm a hard taskmaster I guess!

                • Its that time of year when anything seems possible, so last night I ordered some seeds. Well, I had run out of Sungold tomatoes (shock horror) and wanted to get some Sweet Aperitif to try. Of course I ended up ordering a few more too.

Today I made a list of the food crops and varieties I intend to grow next year. All 92 of them! And I thought 69 was a lot last year!!!

Unfortunately my garden does not get any bigger...

Ha! Most of them are either left over seeds or perennials - I ordered 2 packets of tomatoes, 2 of melons and the 1/2 pint peas, which sounded like a good idea at the time! The scary thing is that I grew most of this lot this year (apart from the recently acquired gooseberry and the melons) along with some things that I won't be growing again like mangetout Shiraz, Pentland Javelin potatoes, tomato Bajaja and pea Early Onward. There IS room out there (she says hopefully). I have plans, which will be revealed later on (if they happen) - got to maintain some sense of mystery here!

                              I think we should have a thread - Penellype's Challenge for 2015

We might yet do that - I will have to work out what exactly the challenge is!
