Mix the carrots?

Just found out I'm a proud owner of 6 or 7 different type of carrots.Stump rooted,long ones,red,yellow-name it.Would you mix them all together or rather not?I'm going to dedicate a raised bed only to Flakkee but I was going to bung others into damaged water buckets as they are deep enough to accomodate them.So-mix them or not?

Will you be able to tell the difference? 'Cos if you really like the taste of one, you might not be able to work out which it is for next year?

Can't see any advantage from mixing them to be honest. you could argue that you'd plant some anti-carrotfly ones to help ward them off the other varieties but you'd have to have the total amount of all the other varieties to even it out, and that's if it would even work. A row of each variety would be better. I had planned to do this but I managed to make a whole pack last the 5 rows in my bed from thinning the seeds out in sand first.

Chef,I must say I'm pretty sceptical about carrot fly "resistant" variety-correct me if I'm wrong.
Jono,Atomic Red and YellowMellow or whatever they are called are different colour.I might struggle with St.Valery and Chantenay Red Cored although I thought St.Valery should be longer.Flakkee goes separately so no problem here.

I'm with you on that. If you have risk of carrot fly cover them with enviromesh or risk having a holey-crop

Deterrents don't work 100%, a 2' barrier doesn't work 100%, and even a relatively few flies that make it to the carrots will wreck havoc.

I mixed all the oddments of carrot seed I had left for my last sowing last year and it worked out brilliantly. Lovely to have a mix of them on the plate and the children loved the surprises when they pulled them. "Nanny - I've got a purple one"!

I grow carrots in wrecked (ice-cracked) water-butts as the height seems to solve the carrot fly problem (though I did read somewhere they'd been found on the top of the Empire State Building so that theory might not be fool-proof, I think they took the lift...). But I quite like the idea of mixing earlies and main crop as they should mature at different times... Will give that a try (after this winter have 2 more ice-cracked water butts, duh!)
