  • Petit Posy - flowering and seed saving in general

I planted out my petit posy in the wrong place last year. Stupidly I put them in a shady area. Having ventured to that part of the garden tonight, one surviving plant is starting to flower. Could I harvest the seed from it to use next year ? the seeds were very expensive and very few in number.

I'm quite new to all this propagation lark. I was also wondering whether I could save the seed from my St George and White lady beans I'm going to be growing this year. I'm not sure how the seed saving works. I have picked up that the squash family aren't very good for seed saving if I'm growing a variety of types is that right ?

Sorry for the varied questions, just would love to know how it works

    many thanks

The Squash family are VERY naughty at crossing with each other. The only way you'll be able to save seeds from them is if you hand pollinate, but you have to be up with the sparrows to do this. Your St George might cross with your White lady if there close to each other. If you want to save seed from them, all you have to do is leave a few bean pods on the plant and let them dry on the plant...it's that simple. If your Petit Posy was F1 you'll not really be able to save seed from them. I grew them last/this year and I wasn't impressed with them at all, but the leaves made lovely tasting greens.

That's a shame, you've managed to pick possibly the three most difficult things to save seed from! Brassicas, squash and runner beans will all cross madly with other plants in the vicinity.

I save seeds from my runners despite growing more than one variety. They might not match the original but they pretty much all taste like runners to me

Petite Posy is an F1 variety and will not come true from seed. I am cropping it now and it is very tasty.

Me too. I like the fact that every year my seed reinvents itself, and adjusts itself more to my local growing conditions. By the time I retire, I shall have superbeans
