I think you'll have got the idea by now Germinator, but just to add my tuppenceworth, you can grow carrots and parsnips in containers other than bought pots if they're deep enough. Have a search on container gardening and you'll get the gist. If you've got an ASDA near you, they give away large back flower buckets which are ideal.Granny on the Game in Sheffield

Morrisons do them too, about 8 for 99p, if your local ASDA can't help. I coaxed a few out of the ASDA produce manager but it was hard work because he said that in our area they recycle them, e.g. send them back to depot to be refilled with flowers so they were an asset, essentially. The Morrisons ones are similar dimensions.

I sowed my parsnips in kichen roll centres. Although they are barely showing their true leaves the roots were alread out the bottom. Planted them out last night hoping that they're be ok.
I'll not be using full length kitchen rolls again as these were practically falling apart.Sometimes you just have to scratch that itch and get dirt under your finger nails.

Our lottie neighbours, who have been doing it long enough to know better, bought some parsnips in modules last year, as theirs hadn't come up. I have no idea how they came out though, the blokie's a little competitive and probably wouldn't admit to me if they were forked. I have no idea how garden centers get away with it.
