Hardcore can be got for nothing wherever you see anyone demolishing anything - it costs to put stuff in landfill these days... And all of my beds have been done with scavenged timber. The outlay could be as minimal as you want, but the digging would still take work of course.

Having seen first hand the results of trying to grow anything other than bog plants in that sort of ground, without draining it, I fear that your hopes of growing edibles in it are a bit forlorn...

Thanks all - i'm going to try some of the edibles suggested, some comfrey and some flowering bog plants to get the insects in
...re hardcore, i'm not adverse to hardwork but i've yet to find somewhere who will provide and deliver hardcore/wood for beds etc all for free - it's why i asked for planting ideas - i've tried everything else,
thanks to all who offered planting ideas - i've enough to keep me busy there xxx

            Cranberries like it boggy.
It was dark. And cold. And very, very empty.

And in the middle of all of the dark, cold, emptiness lay something darker, and colder, but very, very full.
