Semi circular notches around the leaf outside are absolutely pea and bean weevil. Mine are same and lots of people are suffering this year due to warmer spring than normal. Don't worry as they only kill off tiny seedlings and not established plants. They just look frilly but won't alter your crop.Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better...Albert Einstein

I've never lost my crop from them. They just make your plants nice and frilly! There are more things to worry about (like no rain!)Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

Flea beetle is more of a peppering - pea weevil makes need semi-circular notches round the leaves.

newbie needs help with pea problem
hello all, im new to the group and this is my 1st posting.
i have some peas growing that have been in the ground for about 3 weeks, they are about 3inches tall so far but instead of having round leaves they appear to be jagged rather like a saw blade, i have slug pellets on the ground and they seem to be working but the leaves seem to have only very small chunks cut away from the edges, i did notice some red ants in the vicinity , could these be eating the leaves? if so what methods can i introduce to curb it, any help will be appreciated , unfortunately i cannot remember the variety of the pea in question.
just for the record my name is simon and both myself and my wife + 5 children have just been allocated an allotment as we used to keep chickens in our garden but we have very fussy neighbours so decided upon the allotment as we can keep the birds up there with no problems at all.
its only a small plot about 30x20 ft but we have managed to build the chicken run install a 6x4 shed and built 5 large raised beds to grow veg in, so far in the ground we have the following,
potatoes
onion sets
red onions
beetroot
turnips(not too good)
carrots
peas
runner beans (going in this weekend)
i will have a few more questions soon but i don't want to clog up the forum .
look forward to any replies
kind regards simonStill trying to get it right.

Hi Simon and welcome - i like the sound of your set up and hope you enjoy and have a successful summer.
There was a thread earlier this evening discussing pea and bean weevil - sounds like your problem. It seems to be because of the clement weather and nothing to worry too much about (sorry don't know how to link to other threads).
Don't worry about asking questions - the grapes love them!

Roy and Frances thank you for replying like i said im a complete novice where growing is concerned but will get there eventually lol.
im glad its not a major problem though, but i was sat in my chair on the allotment and noticed these little red ants so that's what made me question if it was them.
well thanks again for putting my mind at ease.
kind regards simonStill trying to get it right.
