Probably due to the very dry weather, my overwintered red onions are showing signs of flowering. Should I remove the flower buds?

Sorry - didn't see this thread - I always pick them off - but the onion is never the same. They turn into early harvested onions and get cooked with / chopped and frozen without drying and storing. You will need to chuck out the stem bit in the middle.Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

At a guess I think the answer is remove them or the onion will put all its energy into producing the flower & then the seed rather than swelling the bulb, but it is a guess & quite possibly wrongHe who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

You can, but pick them as soon as you think they are big enough and use pronto - they won't store and if you forget which is which later, you find that you lose a load as they rot. Maybe tie a bit of twine round the ones that you have taken the flower off.

I never have any joy with red onions from sets so have stopped bothering as they ALWAYS go to seed for me!............Whereas seed sown red onions I have no problems with!My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
