Ok, so what is safe to go out now?

Well my greenhouse is brimming cos of this hot weather and I really need the shelf space.

I am in Berks and my last frost date isn't for a couple of weeks, but I really need to get some stuff out of the GH so I can get stuff in from my windowsills.

I am going to list what I got (even though some will be ok to put out) and hopefully you meccahs of the veg can help me by telling me whats safe to go out.

Onions in modules
Carrots in root trainers
Dwarf beans (about 6" high now in paper cups, am getting concerned about these)
Peas
Tomatos (diff varieties)
Chillis (diff varieties)
Peppers (diff varieties)
Aubergines (diff varieties)
Courgettes (diff varieties)
Marigolds
Petunia
Lobelia

The majority are in paper cups and are seriously out growing them.

onions, carrots, peas are ok to go out now. Remember to harden them off before planting them outside.

Not sure why you did carrots in root trainers though? I've sown some direct and will eat any as I'm thinning them.

Do you have a proper greenhouse? My tomatoes, peppers, chillies are all in there now after hardening off and they get fleeced on a cold night (we've got some cold weather in the coming week).

I haven't sown any beans yet and the courgettes went into a pot in the greenhouse yesterday. Some sacrificial courgette went out yesterday but I've got about 6 more varieties to sow for later.

My gh is groaning at the seams too.

This week I am hardening off the French beans, cosmos & morning glories. That will give me room to sow the squashes

The red things are hardy and don't need to be in a gh at all

The rest you can harden off for 7-10 days before your last frost date, then get them planted outside

I always find it very difficult to give advice on when to plat out as I think it is a very personal thing and depends on how much of a gambler you are. I would hate to say go ahead and then someone looses a load of plants. We could still get a frost here in South Wales and yet everyone on my site has potatoes well up and to large to earth up anymore, and all have runner beans planted out. Several have their sweetcorn and courgettes planted out.

As everyone says onions, carrots and peas are hardy. I never plane anything tender out with out protection before 15th May. That is the last day of Saint Glace.

The wind here is a big a problem as the frost atm. Anything going out needs alot of wind protection. Not easy for some things.

Ditto on the winds, I put out my runners and french beans 2 days ago and I have been supremely peeved watching them blow about like rag dolls yesterday and today even though I have them tied off. This happened last year in June/July and snapped half my tomatoes and ruined the cucumbers ;(.

When do you usually put out tender plants then? Is a few weeks after the frost good?

regarding hardening off - do you have do do it every day? i only ask as i sometimes work 24 hour shifts so wouldnt be able to put them out every day for a few weeks say - but would be able to do so most days. will this be OK?

We had hard frosts on 18th the year before last. We like our Glace's late up here!

I remember blogging about the snow in May so I checked up on it. 5th May it was like this and that was when I made the award winning snowman!

It's very sunny here today and I am so tempted to plant out but, looking at these pictures, I think I'll have to hang on a bit longer
