I have just heard the weather man say there will be a frost tonight. What can I do with my runner beans etc that are just coming up. I must admit I have been getting a bit carried away with all this sunny weather. I have some stuff that I am hardening off but I think they are quite safe as are in a sheltered spot.

You need to cover them with fleece, or even sheets of newspaper to stop the frost killing them off

I find that plastic bottle cloches work well for individual plants - although my Runners suffered frost damage last year, despite this protection, as they were poking through the tops I would definitely follow TS' advice, and add fleece too. Luckily mine re-grew from lower down, which surprised me.All the best - Glutton 4 Punishment

I wont be planting out runners and climbing french beens for another 2 weeks. they are in the cold greenhouse now. With runners i always pop a seed in each hole before i drop the plant in (started in Loo Roll centers). I also put a loo role centre sleeve round the bottom of each plant then a mulch of spent hops in a mound. round each plant.

Metoffice and BBC says lows of 6 Celsius tonight for London and Surrey - so hoping we'll be OK here. Especially as I don't want my Dad saying 'I told you so.'
Anyone else in my area going to take precaution just in case?Visit my blog if you dare! www.gardenofheathen.wordpress.com

I am in London too and hoping for the best as all my beans and toms have been outside for weeks and doing very well... possibly foolishly optimistic of me! I think I might try and drape some fleece (dog blankets are all I have) around the bean structure just in case but will have to hope for the best with my toms... I only have so many bits of fleece floating about.
Such bad luck - the rest of the week looks set to be dramatically warmer!

I just put 2 toms in my new tom blight protection frame at the lottie. I didn't tie them in though - put fine netting over them for the next 2 weeks; then I'll tie them in.
I thought I'd be a little racy by putting them out the night before a frost. Just because.....
