DDL you put buckets over rhubarb to force it. This gives you early, tender young stalks of rhubarb but you mustn't do that every year because it exhausts the crowns. So next year leave the crowns uncovered.

I've just picked up a rhubarb called Victoria there is very little information on the packet does any one know where is the best place to plant it. I remember having rhubarb in the garden as a child it was some what like a triffid (early 80's TV show and book The day of the Triffid's) i don't remember it getting any special attention.

"Bolting or seed stalk formation is influenced by stress, age, and variety.
The green stalked varieties are most susceptible, as are older plants.
Infertile soil, heat, cold, daylength or drought may cause plants to bolt.
The flower stalks should be cut out while they are still small."

Think it must be the stress of the changes in weather we are having!
One of mine flowered last year - well tried to- and I chopped it off as soon as I realised that the plant dies after it's flowered . It was only 2 yrs old too!

Thanks Nicos. Mine are only 2 years old too. I was hoping for a crop this year. I agree it must be the stress of the weather we are having. Have a look at my last weather post
