Can I please ask for some advise on my onions. I put them in last October and as per the advise of the local guys at the allotment I put them in, waited for them to develop and the pushed the soil away so that just the base of the onion was in the ground.

Now over winter they have sunk and there is a bit of onion (well it is straight not a ball / onion shape) say 1” showing and then the green leaves. Also where the ground has been left over winter it is not soft and small soil but kind of all together.

My question is should I hoe around the onions and break the soil up a bit or just leave them as they are? And so I need to do that thing with pushing the soil away again?

Last Question when will they start to swell and turn into a ball or are they doing this already under the surface and I just cant see it.

I have just fed and hoed my overwintered onions. I gave the onions some chicken manure pellets. I used a had hoe to go carefully between the onions. I will consider the distances a little more carefully this year as the hoeing was a big job. I think i overplanted and a little too close. I can see the difference in the onions since giving them a feed two weeks ago.

Right - that's me off to do that tomorrow! Mine look such sickly little things, the chicken pellets will hopefully give them a good boost.
