Hello Goddess, there's no rush to sow kale. It's usually grown to provide greens in the period Sept through to March. You could plant from now anytime up to July. I'm saving my space for the things I want to get early, and I'll plant the kale when I've got a crop of something out and the kale can go in it's space.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

My sentiments exactly! I love kale and planted mine too early last year! It meant the kale was hogging ground that could have been used for other crops. It's just coming to the end of it's cropping period now!. I intend sowing mine in May/June to plant out in July/August this year. Kale comes into it's own in the winter when there aint much greenery about and as it finishes the Spring cabbage takes over!

You can sow kale into seed trays or cells to save space on the lottie. Plant out when well grown, but not too early. Look on the seed packet for advice on exact sowing and planting times.

You sow kale seeds March - May for full size plantsbut if you just want small salad plants you can sow later.

I sow them 1 cm deep in module trays and treat them like other brasicas, planting out when large enough into their final position (5-6 weeks) leaving 1.5 feet between plants.

They are very sttractive plants and I'm growing mine in my flower borders to save veg patch space (along with swiss chard)
