  • My cucumbers are pathetic

Weedy and feeble. Is it too late to sow more? Should I go for plants, instead?

Looks like we've something in common. Since seeing pics of peoples here in flower when mine are an inch high makes me jealous!

If they don't come to anything, I'm giving up with 'em!

I germinate mine in unheated propagator on top of my radiator covers, then once through move to windowsill (lots if light/big window) and remove lid. Once temps rise in unheated greenhouse they go in there. Mine are nearly two foot high now. Once flowers start I feed weekly with seaweed feed.

Cumbers need warmth to grow, my spare (always have a spare) is still on an internal window sill over 3ft high those in the GH are about 18". I would say give em time yet.

However if you do decide to get rid you may want to try this. Cut off the growing tip leaving about 4" of stem, place this in water like you would a cut flower (I like to use a milk bottle) place on window sill and leave for a week or so. If you have any luck you will see roots start to grow. Give it another few days to get lots of roots and pot it up, it will then take a couple of days to settle, then watch it grow.

If ever I look like losing a plant I do the above and get about a 75% result.

If they were nearer I would gladly donate to their cuke fund but South Wales and Essex are a tad too far!CM do you visit the Shires?

I'm coming up to derby again soon (my sister is due to give birth soon).

I just started mine off too late I reckon, last year I started them off in feb, this year erm, can't remember

Shame, as I bought a few different types this year! Hopefully next year the house will be a bit more sorted, things will have settled down so I'll be able to get sorted in better time next year!

Goodness knows what has happened to mine. They started off briliantly but have slowed down to less than a tortoise speed. The bottom leaves have gone all crinkly and all told they're about 5 inches tall if that. I was so looking forward to cuc butties but maybe give it a miss. They're still inside on a south facing window sill looking pathetic next to the tomatoes.

They may have run out of gas ... try potting them on a bit with fresh compost (not too big a pot, just one size up)

I agree with Twosheds. Give them a physical boost!

I am afraid that I think all mine have been dished out - or I'd offer you one. I've given away a tray of plants a day for the last few weeks; give or take a day here and there......so I'm down to minimal supplies.

I can have a butchers at the weekend to see if I have a lowly cuke sitting somewhere wanting a new home to go to....it will be a white one though - not a fancy green one.

I never sow my cucs until well into April as I find they're a pain if I do it earlier as they get too big. Mine are currently about 5" tall and will do just fine when I plant them out in the polytunnel early next month.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
