  • Running bean leaves turning yellow and drying

Just went to check on my beans and was shocked to see some of the leaves dying

Is it disease or normal? I am a bit concerned as its first time I have ever tried these and don't wanna fail less than a month in

Were they hardened-off before you put them out? It looks like that kind of damage.

Out of curiosity, how many are you growing in what looks like a 20 - 30 litre container?

container holds about 45 litres, got 8 in there.
They were pretty much hardened off yes and they have been alright for the last week, only in the last 24 hours I have spotted this. Will it be the end of the plant?

Looks a bit like my pumpkins, that got battered by the rain, wind then the sun.. A mix of wind burn and scorch, rather than a disease.

They look large enough to take it on the chin though, but you may do well providing them with a bit of shelter, if as above you didn't harden them off before moving them outdoors.

Yea had all three here in the last 24 hours, wind, rain and sun. It only seems to be the plants in one pot though that look a bit damaged, the ones in the pot next to it all fine.

Nah they'll be fine, I've had plants damaged worse shrug it off, it just may set them back slightly.

It could be that, that one plant took the brunt of the wind, and sheltered the rest.

Haha, Ironic you say that but the worst affected on is the plant at the back!

I agree with 2Sheds I have took to standing my first early spuds (in Morrisons pots) in front of my beans for the last few years and find this gives good protection against wind damage.

Yes they should be OK give them a couple of days before making any decision about their future.

These are mine from last year, after I put them out before the last frost, with no hardening off:

I sowed new beans, and took these photos when I went out to rip them up and start again. If you look carefully, you can just see new green shoots growing - they recovered.

Don't think you've too much to worry about, but try and shelter them to prevent it getting any worse.

What an educational thread! I noticed a few dry leaf edges on my french beans yesterday and was a bit worried, seems like it must be wind damage... after looking at the photos and link above I probably don't have much to worry about

My beetroot and swiss chard on the other hand was much worse off... I thought it might be sun scorch/beet miner/over-watering. Now I am thinking it was the wind! Such a shame as I tossed them yesterday and put some new seeds in.

Chard will go on proiducing new leaves till this time next year! Never chuck your chard, chuck!
