  • Do You Use Collars?

I wonder how many people use collars for their brassicas and if they are bought or home made? I did look at buying some felt squares, but it doesn't work out any cheaper.

I've made mine out of roofing felt that was left over from some job or other Mr Pots did.

Ooh Bren, (getting all excited), I've got some roofing felt in the shed left over from re-roofing it.

After last years attack from cabbage root fly (think I had them for the whole county) Yes.
Another cheap material to cut your own from is builders 100mm wide Damp Proof Course, easier to cut than felt you will get about 300 out of a £3.50 roll.

I used them last year for my competition walking stick kale. I won, so they must work.

I never use them on the over winter vegetables, but for the ones growing outside now, yes.

Not using them for brassicas but having found some in the shed, they are placed around the melon and cucumber plants in the greenhouse. The theory being that they might help to hold the moisture in? Hope so any way. Apart from the practical side, they look neat and they are porous so the water goes straight through into the bucket.

After a bad attack of root fly a few years ago I have used them ever since. So far I have not had a repeat attack. I use bought ones simply because they are compostable when after a few seasons use they split.

I've also just found a roll of black weed suppressant material in the shed (I'm supposed to be changing the bed linen, so don't tell anyone). I suppose I could cut some of that up.

Flo I used weed fabric last year and you have to weigh it down with stones or it blows away but apart from that it worked fine.

Never thought of that Bren, thanks. Suppose I'd better get on with making the bed, or we'll have to use sleeping bags tonight!

I've used cardboard for years and it's been fine. Water well before you put them on.
