I don't have enough buckets for beans - they are full up with excess aubergines and chillis! I've 30 or so in the greenhouse on staging (chillis) and on the floor (aubergine). I also grow cucumbers in them (one plant per bucket, on the floor of the greenhouse). The slightly bigger ones work best, but the smaller ones are OK. Oh and strawberries also (one plant).

I also tried using them over winter - some turnips (4 per bucket) worked, as did chard, but a lot of stuff didn't get watered enough :-(

I've had courgettes in them for a few years.

I asked a couple of weeks ago at our Asda at the "help" desk, an annoying woman that I can't stand was on it and she looked surprised when I asked. Told me when I went back that they didn't give them away anymore and they were reused. Then asked why I wanted them, looked bemused when I told her.
Funny there was a little pile of 5 of the buckets next to her feet when I went back.... Mmm

I waited till she wasn't there and asked again yesterday, got given 25 by a great bloke.

It's who you speak to. He did say they send them back now, but if they reuse them or what, I'm not sure.

Best time to get them is early in the season, when not so many people are looking. They sometimes tape up more than 8 for your 99p.

I've got about 75 of them waiting to be planted with things. I got most of them at Asda although also got about 6 each at Waitrose and M&S. They said they don't give/throw them away but gave me some as a gesture of goodwill. Now I've just got to visit the compost fairy and get some so I can pot everything up into big pots. Now that I've shifted my excess seedlings I actually have space in the greenhouses!

If you get there whilst they are still putting out the flowers and ask the person who is doing it you will get some. Otherwise ask for the Produce manager. Some customer service desk people are aware but not all.

You were lucky to get some at Waitrose, Minamoo. I was passing and spotted a stack of empty buckets in my local W and was told that they were reused and then recycled when no longer servicible.

No gesture of goodwill at all Back to Morrisons it is then.
Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't, you are probably right.

I like free too. But I'll settle for the 23 more I picked up today for my 99p. It's close enough.

so hang on...are you saying that we can just GO INTO A SUPERMARKET and ask if they have any 'spare' flower buckets and sometimes they'll give you them? And if not, and I can find a big morrisons, i can buy big cheap ones there?
this seems too good to be true. at least, in london. but my heart is beating faster...

They are really handy, I get them from morrisons they usually just ask what I'm growing in them to which I reply everything. I am growing peas in a load 3 to a pot at the minute and today I had my first peas of the year yum!

The first time I asked at Waitrose, they gave me some. Second time, I was told the same thing about them reusing them etc. I think it really does depend on who you ask. DH just gave me a rectangular plastic crate that he no longer needs indoors so I'm going to use it to grow carrots.Or maybe I should plant up two toms in it and use the deep flower buckets for carrots instead.... So many decisions! I would have sowed them in the ground only...that involves digging over another bed in the garden but we need the room to manoever to build the new chicken run. The joys of trying to do too many tihngs at once...
